Chapter 11 - The Desperation Of An Outcast: Julian’s Search For Allies

The biting wind whipped through the canyons of the Manhattan financial district, carrying with it the sharp scent of melting slush and exhaust fumes.
Julian Bellandi huddled inside the collar of his wrinkled wool coat, wandering aimlessly down Madison Avenue like a ghost haunting the streets of his former life.
His phone was completely dead, his credit cards had all been declined or blocked by automated fraud alerts, and his pockets held barely forty dollars in crumpled paper bills.
He knew he couldn’t return to his empty penthouse, nor could he face the humiliation of contacting any of his former corporate associates who had already severed ties.
There was only one person left in the city who owed him something—or so Julian foolishly convinced himself in his desperate state of denial.
Elena.
He dragged his heavy, synthetic duffel bag toward the subway entrance, swiping a faded metro card to descend into the damp, echoing subterranean depths of the transit system.
Twenty minutes later, he emerged into the bleak, gray light of Second Avenue, walking unsteadily toward the modest mid-rise apartment building where he had dropped his mistress off just twenty-four hours earlier.
He climbed the three flights of concrete stairs with leaden legs, his chest aching from the bitter cold and the relentless stress of his sudden, absolute ruin.
When he reached apartment 3B, he didn't even bother knocking with subtlety; he hammered his fist against the cheap wooden door with frantic, desperate energy.
“Elena! Open the door! It’s me, Julian!” he called out hoarsely, praying that she would offer him shelter, sympathy, or at least a warm cup of coffee.
After a long, agonizing pause, the deadbolt clicked loudly, and the door swung open a few inches, held securely in place by a heavy brass security chain.
Elena peered out through the narrow gap, her face completely devoid of the warmth, affection, or clinging desperation she had displayed the night before.
Her eyes were cold, hard, and calculating as she looked down at the disheveled, pathetic wreck of a man standing in her hallway.
“What do you want, Julian?” Elena asked flatly, her voice dropping all pretense of romantic attachment.
“Elena, please… let me in. The cards are blocked, my accounts are frozen, and I have nowhere else to go in this city,” Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with humiliation.
“You think I’m going to let a broke, homeless man ruin my life?” Elena scoffed bitterly, a harsh laugh escaping her lips. “My landlord is already evicting me because your corporate check bounced this morning!”
“Elena, listen to me, I can fix this! Once my lawyers sort out the probate court—,” Julian started, reaching out a desperate hand toward the door frame.
“There is no court, Julian! You lost! Now get away from my door before I call the police and tell them a crazy stalker is harassing me!” she screamed venomously.

Before Julian could utter another word, the door slammed shut in his face with a deafening crash, the heavy security chain rattling against the frame.
Julian stood alone in the dark, empty hallway, the final illusion of his charming double life shattering into a million pieces around his feet.
