Chapter 4 - The Hour Glass Runs Out: Julian’s Return To An Empty Nest

Forty-five minutes later, Julian sprinted out of Elena’s apartment building, breathless, freezing, and frantically sliding into his wet wool coat as he rushed back to his car.
He checked his watch with a rising sense of panic; he was pushing dangerously close to the one-hour limit he had promised Kate before walking out on her.
He threw himself into the driver’s seat of the sedan, revving the engine aggressively as he peeled away from the curb and sped toward their luxury penthouse downtown.
The snow was coming down in thick, blinding sheets now, turning the glittering Manhattan streets into a hazardous maze of stalled traffic and flashing emergency lights.
Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, not out of genuine love for his wife, but out of absolute terror of facing an angry, unpredictable confrontation.
He pulled into the subterranean parking garage of his high-rise residential tower, screeching to a halt in his designated private parking space with tires sliding on the slush.
Without wasting a single second, he bolted out of the car, punched the elevator button with a frantic finger, and rode the express car up to the eightieth floor in record time.
The private elevator dinged softly, sliding open directly into the private foyer of their penthouse apartment, which was usually bathed in warm, welcoming holiday lights.
Tonight, however, the foyer was dead silent, dark, and eerily cold, lacking the cozy ambiance that had defined their holidays for the past five years.
“Kate?” Julian called out tentatively, stepping across the threshold and kicking off his snow-covered designer shoes onto the Italian marble floor.
No answer came from the living room, save for the crackling of the glowing embers in the grand stone fireplace and the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree.
Julian walked quickly into the living room, his eyes scanning the space for his pregnant wife, but the mahogany dining table was completely cleared of its festive spread.
The untouched crystal wine glasses were gone, the gourmet food had been neatly stored away, and the room felt entirely stripped of its warmth and vitality.
“Kate, stop playing games. I’m back, just like I promised!” Julian raised his voice slightly, a nervous edge creeping into his confident baritone as he walked toward the master bedroom.
He pushed open the heavy double doors of the master suite, expecting to find her sitting up in bed reading a book or waiting for him with tear-stained cheeks.
Instead, the king-sized bed was made with military precision, the closet doors stood wide open to reveal empty hangers, and her vanity table was completely stripped bare of her cosmetics.
Julian froze instantly, the blood draining rapidly from his face as a cold, terrifying wave of realization washed over his confused, panicked mind.
He rushed over to the walk-in closet, shoving aside row after row of empty hangers where her designer dresses, winter coats, and shoes had hung just hours earlier.

On the center island of the walk-in closet sat a single, plain white envelope with his name written across the front in his wife’s sharp, elegant handwriting.
With shaking fingers, Julian snatched up the envelope, tore it open frantically, and pulled out the single sheet of heavy cardstock paper hidden inside.
