Chapter 7 - The Morning After: The Cold Awakening Of Elena Vance

High above the silent, snow-covered streets of Manhattan, morning sunlight broke through the heavy gray winter clouds, casting a harsh, unsparing glare across the city.
Inside her modest, cramped third-floor apartment on Second Avenue, Elena stirred beneath a thin fleece blanket, shivering as the drafty radiator clanked loudly in the corner.
She rubbed her eyes, expecting to wake up to the comforting scent of fresh coffee and the warm presence of Julian lying beside her on the small pull-out sofa bed.
Instead, the living room was dead silent, cold, and utterly empty, with no sign of Julian anywhere in the cramped, cluttered apartment space.
Elena sat up quickly, wrapping her oversized cashmere robe tightly around her shoulders as a knot of unease began to twist tightly in her stomach.
“Julian?” she called out tentatively, her voice echoing off the peeling wallpaper of the small kitchenette where a single dirty mug sat in the sink.
There was no reply, only the distant sound of police sirens wailing down on the slush-covered avenue below the frosted windows.
Elena walked over to the small coffee table where Julian had dropped his leather designer wallet and car keys the night before during their hurried arrival.
The table was completely bare, save for a neatly folded, crisp hundred-dollar bill resting beneath a handwritten sticky note scribbled in hurried, panicked handwriting.
She picked up the note with trembling fingers, her eyes scanning the hurried scrawl that would change the trajectory of her parasitic existence forever.
“Elena, an emergency came up with my assets. I can’t see you right now. Stay out of sight and do not call this number,” the note read bluntly, lacking even a sign-off.
Elena dropped the note as if it had burned her fingers, a cold wave of realization washing over her selfish, calculating mind with terrifying clarity.
Julian hadn't just left to handle a minor corporate emergency; he had fled like a coward the moment he realized his wealthy, powerful wife had cut him off entirely.
She had latched onto Julian Bellandi because she wanted a life of endless luxury, high-end shopping sprees, penthouse apartments, and VIP reservations at exclusive Manhattan restaurants.
Now, standing in a freezing one-bedroom apartment with a hundred-dollar bill and a broken promise, she realized she had hitched her wagon to a sinking, ruined ship.

“Damn you, Julian…” Elena hissed venomously, throwing the hundred-dollar bill across the room as the stark reality of her destitute future set in.
She had played a dangerous, high-stakes game of home-wrecking for personal gain, and she was about to discover that Kate Bellandi’s retribution spared no one in its path.
