Chapter 6 - The Frozen Streets And The Descent Into Reality

The heavy steel doors of the underground parking garage closed with a resounding, mechanical thud, sealing Julian Bellandi in a chilling, cavernous silence.

He stood paralyzed on the cold concrete, his eyes darting frantically between the expensive luxury sedan parked a few feet away and the cheap, synthetic duffel bag resting at his feet.

His breath plumed in the freezing air in ragged, shallow gasps as the sheer, catastrophic magnitude of his new reality began to sink into his fractured mind.

With trembling fingers, Julian reached down and picked up the single brass key resting beside the duffel bag, the metal biting into his skin with icy severity.

He tried the automated door handle of his luxury sedan, but the electronic locks remained sealed tight, refusing to respond to his remote key fob as the onboard computer system had already revoked his access.

“No… this has to be some kind of sick joke. Kate wouldn’t do this on Christmas Day,” Julian muttered frantically to himself, his voice echoing off the concrete pillars like a madman’s plea.

He whipped out his broken smartphone from his pocket, staring helplessly at the shattered glass screen that stubbornly displayed a dead, unresponsive black display.

He was locked out of his car, locked out of his penthouse, locked out of his bank accounts, and completely cut off from the multi-million-dollar empire he had taken for granted.

Desperation overriding his remaining shreds of dignity, Julian snatched up the cheap duffel bag, turned on his heel, and sprinted toward the elevator banks leading back up to the lobby.

He smashed his fist repeatedly against the call button, waiting through an agonizing eternity until the stainless-steel doors finally slid open with a soft, mocking chime.

Julian threw himself into the elevator car, jabbing the button for the eightieth floor with a shaking thumb while whispering rapid, panicked prayers under his breath.

The express elevator shot upward at breakneck speed, his ears popping from the sudden change in air pressure as he soared toward the summit of his former life.

When the doors slid open on the eightieth floor, Julian charged out into the private foyer, racing toward the heavy mahogany double doors of his penthouse apartment.

He didn't bother knocking; he jammed the brass key into the deadbolt and turned it with all his might, expecting the familiar click of unlocking tumblers.

Instead, the key spun uselessly in the cylinder, loose and disconnected, because the security team had already replaced the entire locking mechanism with high-security biometric cylinders.

“Kate! Open the door! Let me explain! Please, just talk to me!” Julian screamed, pounding his fists desperately against the solid wood until his knuckles bruised and bled.

No answer came from inside the penthouse, save for the faint, muffled sound of classical holiday music playing softly on an automated sound system that mocked his misery.

He slid down the door frame until he was sitting on the cold marble floor of the foyer, pulling his knees up to his chest as the first genuine tears of despair wet his face.

He had traded a loyal, brilliant, fiercely devoted pregnant wife for a fragile, demanding mistress, and in less than twelve hours, he had lost everything he had ever built.

As the distant chime of a grandfather clock echoed through the empty hallway signaling midnight on Christmas Day, Julian realized he was entirely alone in the freezing dark.
