Chapter 2 - The Empty Seat At The Holiday Table

The heavy mahogany front door clicked shut with a sickeningly hollow sound, sealing the penthouse in a profound, deafening silence that felt heavier than an avalanche.
Kate stood alone in the vast, brilliantly lit living room, the glowing lights of the Christmas tree casting long, distorted shadows across the imported Persian rug.
She gently rubbed her swollen belly, feeling her baby stir once more as if sensing the emotional earthquake that had just reshaped their universe.
There was no screaming, no shattering of fine crystal wine glasses, and no frantic tearing at her hair; Kate’s vengeance was going to be a masterpiece of cold, calculating precision.
She walked slowly over to the dining table, looking down at the immaculate, multi-course Christmas feast she had spent the entire day preparing with love and meticulous care.
Two crystal wine glasses sat untouched beside silver cutlery, waiting for a husband who was currently driving another woman away into the snowy Manhattan night.
Kate picked up her phone from the polished mahogany surface, unlocking the secure screen with her biometric thumbprint and opening an encrypted legal messaging application.
She tapped on a contact saved under the simple initial V, dialing a direct, secure line that connected straight to Vance, the most ruthless corporate attorney and asset recovery specialist in the city.
The phone picked up on the very first ring, as if Vance had been sitting in the dark waiting for her call like an executioner at the gallows.
“It’s Christmas Eve, Kate. I take it Julian finally made his choice?” Vance’s smooth, gravelly voice echoed through the speaker, devoid of holiday cheer.
“He walked out the front door ten minutes ago to take her home,” Kate replied, her voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of the tears she had shed earlier.
“And the prenuptial restructuring documents?” Vance asked professionally, the sound of rustling papers coming through the encrypted audio feed.
“They’re fully executed, signed, and notarized as of this afternoon. Every asset, every corporate share, and every overseas account tied to his name is now legally sequestered,” Kate confirmed smoothly.
“Brilliant. By the time the sun rises on Christmas morning, Julian Bellandi will legally wake up as a pauper sleeping on a park bench,” Vance stated with cold satisfaction.
“Don’t leave him on a park bench, Vance. Let him keep his clothes. He’ll need them when he realizes he has nowhere left to go,” Kate whispered, a chilling smile touching her lips.
“Consider it done, Mrs. Bellandi. Happy holidays,” Vance chuckled darkly before disconnecting the secure call with a soft beep.
Kate slipped her phone back into the pocket of her crimson dress, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows to watch the snow continue to blanket the sleeping city below.
She knew Julian would return within the hour, full of hollow apologies, rehearsed lies, and desperate promises to sweep the entire mess under the rug.

He had no idea that while he was driving his pregnant mistress through the snow, his entire corporate empire was being systematically dismantled down to the last paperclip.
Kate placed both hands protectively over her belly, whispering into the quiet room, “Merry Christmas, Julian. You’re about to receive the harvest of what you sowed.”
