Chapter 3 - The Mistress In The Snow: Unraveling The Third Corner

Down on the freezing, snow-slicked streets of the Upper East Side, Julian Bellandi’s luxury European sedan crept forward through the blizzard conditions with frustrating slowness.

In the passenger seat sat Elena, his twenty-four-year-old mistress, wrapped in an oversized cashmere coat, her cheeks stained with dried tears and her frame trembling violently.

“Julian, I’m so sorry… I didn’t mean to ruin your Christmas Eve with Kate,” Elena sniffled pitifully, dabbing at her eyes with a damp tissue. “I just didn’t have anywhere else to go.”

Julian kept his eyes glued to the snowy road ahead, his knuckles white around the leather steering wheel, his mind racing frantically between guilt and rising panic.

“It’s fine, Elena. Just stop crying. I’ll drop you off at your apartment, settle you in, and I’ll head right back to the penthouse before Kate gets suspicious,” Julian repeated like a broken record.

He had convinced himself that Kate was too naive, too deeply in love, and too heavily pregnant to ever truly leave him or call his bluff.

He genuinely believed that her eerie calm when he walked out the door was simply shock, a temporary pause before she forgave him as she always did.

As the sedan pulled up in front of Elena’s modest, mid-rise apartment building on Second Avenue, Julian threw the gear shift into park with an impatient snap.

“Come on, let’s get you inside before you freeze,” Julian sighed, stepping out into the biting winter wind and rushing around to open her passenger door.

He walked her up the icy stone steps of the building, holding her elbow to steady her against the slippery sleet accumulating on the ground.

Once they reached the heavy wooden door of her third-floor apartment, Elena fumbled nervously through her handbag for her brass keys with cold, stiff fingers.

“Julian… stay for just a few minutes? Please? The apartment is so cold and lonely tonight,” Elena pleaded, looking up at him with wide, tear-filled, manipulative eyes.

Julian hesitated, glancing down at his gold designer wristwatch, watching the second hand sweep relentlessly toward the one-hour mark he had promised Kate.

“Elena, I can’t. Kate is waiting for me, and I promised her I’d come straight back,” Julian said, though his resolve was noticeably softening under her warm gaze.

“Just ten minutes, Julian. Just long enough to make sure the radiator is working,” she whispered, pressing her body softly against his chest in a calculated display of affection.

Julian sighed heavily, giving in to his lifelong weakness for instant gratification and surrender to temptation, completely unaware of the trap snapping shut behind him.

He unlocked the apartment door, stepped inside the dark, cramped living space, and closed the door behind them, sealing his fate while the snow fell harder outside.
