Chapter 2 - The Pedigree of a Ghost

The blonde woman tugged hard on Trevor's tailored sleeve, her diamond-encrusted bracelet clinking loudly in the tense silence.

""Trevor, darling, who is this filthy person?"" she asked, her voice laced with nasal condescension.

""Did she actually try to touch you?""

""Call the galleria security immediately before she gives us both some kind of airborne infection.""

Trevor offered his companion a smirking, self-satisfied pat on the knuckles.

""Don't worry your pretty head, Chloe,"" he said loud enough for the boutique staff to hear.

""She's an old charity project from my university days who never learned how to stand on her own two feet.""

""Her mother died in a public ward, and her father drank himself into a ditch before she even learned how to multiply.""

The words hit Sadi like a cold splash of sewer water, but her face remained carved out of stone.

She remembered holding her mother's trembling, cancer-ravaged hand in that freezing public hospital room while Trevor spent her rent money on bespoke ties for his junior fraternity galas.

""You haven't paid back a single cent of what you stole from that kitchen jar, Trevor,"" Sadi said quietly, her voice cutting through his facade like a razor.

Trevor's face flushed a violent, blotchy crimson underneath his designer bronzer.

""Watch your lying mouth,"" he snarled, stepping another inch forward and raising an index finger inches from her nose.

""You gave me that money freely to invest in our shared future.""

""You were too stupid to realize that some people outgrow their trailer-park roots while others stay chained to the floor.""

""Now step aside and limp out of this private wing before I have the building superintendent drag you through the service exit.""

""Is there a complication here, Mr. Vance?""

A low, gravelly voice resonated from the shadows of the mezzanine rotunda behind them.

The sound did not boom, yet it carried an unnatural density that instantly sucked the air out of the luxury corridor.

Two broad-shouldered men in immaculate charcoal suits stepped out from behind the marble pillars, their postures rigid and their hands crossed cleanly over their belts.

Behind them, emerging from the private elevator alcove, walked a figure that made the surrounding opulence look cheap and hollow.

Roman Vane did not hurry.

He took long, measured strides across the polished marble, his bespoke raven overcoat swaying gently around his tall, imposing frame.

He wore no visible gold, no ostentatious wristwatches, and no flamboyant ties.

His power was an absolute, suffocating vacuum that cleared the walkway without a single word being shouted.

Shoppers instinctively backed into storefront doorways as he passed, recognizing the chilling silhouette of the man who quietly owned seventy percent of the city's commercial grid.

Chloe's eyes widened in profound shock as she caught sight of him, her manicured hand dropping instantly from Trevor's arm.

""Trevor..."" she whispered frantically, her voice trembling.

""Isn't that... isn't that Mr. Vane?""

""The chairman of the port authority consortium your board has been begging for a meeting with?""

Trevor's chest puffed out with reckless, unearned bravado.

He quickly adjusted his navy necktie, a groveling, predatory grin spreading across his thin lips.

""Mr. Vane!"" Trevor called out, completely abandoning Sadi and taking three eager steps toward the approaching giant.

""Sir, what an absolute honor to run into you outside our regional headquarters.""

""I'm Trevor Vance, junior vice president at Sterling Capital.""

""We sent your executive team our waterfront logistics prospectus last Thursday.""

Roman did not look at Trevor's outstretched hand.

He did not look at Trevor's manicured face.

He did not look at Chloe's pale, trembling smile.

Roman walked straight past the junior executive as though Trevor were nothing more than a pane of dirty glass.

Trevor's outstretched hand hung frozen in the empty air, his grin curdling into utter humiliation.

Roman stopped exactly two inches in front of Sadi.

The terrifying, dead-eyed expression that normally struck fear into city prosecutors vanished the moment his dark gaze locked onto her face.

""You're late for lunch, my love,"" Roman murmured, his voice softening into a rich, deep baritone that belonged only to her.

Sadi offered a faint, tired smile, feeling the sudden warmth of his presence thaw the cold dread in her chest.

""I got distracted looking at cufflinks,"" she whispered back.

Roman's eyes dropped down to her stance.

He noticed immediately that her weight was shifted heavily onto her left side.

His gaze followed the line of her denim jeans down to the right calf, where a dark, dusty smudge marked the fabric above a visible tremor.

Roman knelt down on the cold marble floor without a single second of hesitation.

The richest, most lethal man in the metropolitan empire dropped onto both knees at her feet in the middle of a crowded luxury corridor.

He gently gripped the hem of her denim pant leg and rolled it up two inches.

A blooming, violent purple contusion was already swelling against her pale skin, outlining the sharp edge of a shoe's impact.

A suffocating, arctic silence descended over the entire boutique wing.

The sales manager behind the glass counter dropped his inventory clipboard onto the floor with a terrifying clatter.

Trevor stood frozen in place, the blood draining entirely from his arrogant face until his lips turned an ash-gray color.
