Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Scapegoat

Chloe Sterling let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek that echoed off the soaring glass dome of the mall.
""You idiot!"" she screamed, violently shoving Trevor in the chest with both hands.
""What did you just do to my father's business?""
""You told me she was a penniless stalker from your old neighborhood!""
""You told me you were doing me a favor by clearing the walkway!""
Trevor stumbled backward from her shove, completely disoriented, his eyes darting frantically between the enraged heiress and Roman Vane's broad back.
""Chloe, baby, listen to me, please!"" Trevor begged, reaching out with both hands to grasp her silk sleeve.
""I didn't know!""
""How could anybody possibly know that this dirty waitress was sleeping with the city's premier oligarch?""
""She's playing him, Chloe!""
""She's a fraud who used my money to survive and now she's using him!""
A heavy, gloved hand clamped down onto Trevor's shoulder like a hydraulic vise.
Elias, Roman's chief of personal security, leaned down until his breath stirred the hair on Trevor's ear.
""Take your hands off the young lady, Mr. Vance,"" Elias said in a tone that promised broken bones.
""And hand over your corporate identification badge before I remove it along with your lapel.""
Trevor's fingers trembled so violently he could barely unclip the gold-plated security card from his breast pocket.
He dropped it into Elias's waiting palm as if the plastic were on fire.
Around them, a crowd of wealthy shoppers, high-end retail associates, and armed mall guards had gathered in a wide, silent circle.
Smartphones were subtly being raised behind designer bags, capturing the humiliating fall of Sterling Capital's rising golden boy.
Sadi watched the spectacle from beside Roman, her heart thumping against her ribs like a trapped bird.
For three agonizing years, Trevor had lived inside her nightmares as an untouchable, gilded giant.
He had convinced her that she was worthless, that she was born to be discarded, that her only purpose was to serve his ambition and disappear.
Yet standing here, under the unblinking glare of the galleria's chandeliers, Trevor looked pathetic.
He looked small, desperate, and entirely hollow.
Roman placed a firm, protective hand on the small of Sadi's back, gently guiding her away from the commotion.
""Can you walk to the car, or do I carry you?"" Roman asked, his voice returning to that private, velvet cadence.
""I can walk,"" Sadi replied, lifting her chin and forcing herself to ignore the dull throbbing in her leg.
""I've walked on far worse than a bruised calf, Roman.""
""Not while you carry my ring on your finger,"" Roman answered simply.
He leaned down, slid one powerful arm beneath her knees and the other behind her back, and lifted her into his arms before she could utter a single word of protest.
The crowd parted instantly, creating an open corridor of reverence and fear as Roman carried his wife toward the private subterranean exit.
Behind them, Trevor's desperate screams echoed down the marble hallway.
""Sadi! Tell him!""
""Tell him about the diner!""
""Tell him about the six hundred dollars!""
""You owe me your entire youth, you ungrateful bitch!""
The heavy double doors of the private elevator hissed shut, cutting off Trevor's voice as cleanly as a guillotine blade.
Inside the elevator, the silence was thick, heavy, and charged with unspoken history.
Roman did not set her down until they reached the interior of the armored Maybach waiting in the underground garage.
He lowered her onto the hand-stitched leather seat with the delicate care of a man handling centuries-old porcelain.
He pulled the door shut, climbed into the seat beside her, and tapped the frosted privacy partition twice.
The vehicle glided smoothly out of the subterranean bay, leaving the chaos behind.
Roman reached into the console, pulled out a chilled bottle of mineral water, and poured it into a crystal glass before handing it to her.
""Drink,"" he instructed softly.
Sadi took the glass, her hands finally giving in to a minor, involuntary shake.
""You didn't have to destroy an entire brokerage firm over a bruised leg, Roman,"" she whispered, staring into the water.
Roman turned his head, his cold, aristocratic profile silhouetted against the tinted window.
""A brokerage firm is merely an assembly of numbers, contracts, and disposable signatures,"" Roman said, his voice entirely devoid of remorse.
""Your safety, however, is non-negotiable.""
""When I pulled you out of that burning diner kitchen fourteen months ago, Sadi, you didn't ask me who I was.""
""You didn't ask me for my bank balance.""
""You stitched the bullet wound in my side with an embroidery needle and kept my location secret from three rival cartels while they held a gun to your temple.""
Roman reached over, gently taking her small hand into his own scarred palm.
""A man who kicks the woman who saved my empire does not get to keep his career.""
May you like
""He does not get to keep his reputation.""
""And by the time the sun sets tomorrow, he will not even keep his shoes.""
