Chapter 3 - The Ledger of Ruin

Roman's thumb traced the outer perimeter of the bruise with agonizing tenderness, never applying enough pressure to cause her pain.

""Who did this to you, Sadi?"" Roman asked.

He did not raise his voice.

He did not shout.

Yet the words sounded like a death sentence read inside a reinforced concrete bunker.

Sadi looked down at the dark, silver-threaded hair of the man kneeling before her, feeling the fierce protection that had shielded her for the past six months.

""It was an educational demonstration,"" Sadi said softly, her eyes flicking toward the shaking junior executive.

""Mr. Vance was explaining to his fiancée that vagrants like me don't belong on this side of the city.""

Roman slowly rose to his full height, standing six feet three inches of unyielding violence wrapped in Italian wool.

He turned his body halfway toward Trevor, his dark eyes locking onto the younger man with the cold calculation of an executioner adjusting a noose.

Trevor took a staggering step backward, his polished leather shoes squeaking pathetically against the marble.

""Mr... Mr. Vane, please allow me to explain,"" Trevor stammered, sweat instantly breaking out across his forehead, ruining his expensive salon hairstyle.

""There has been a monumental misunderstanding here.""

""This woman is an unstable former acquaintance from my impoverished past.""

""She was loitering suspiciously near the boutique windows, blocking foot traffic, and I merely cleared a path for my fiancée.""

""I barely touched her with my shoe.""

""It was an administrative correction, nothing more.""

Chloe stood petrified three feet away, clutching her luxury bag against her chest like a riot shield, her face completely drained of color.

""An administrative correction,"" Roman repeated, testing the syllables in his mouth as if tasting poison.

He glanced sideways at the boutique manager, who was now standing outside his store with his hands trembling at his sides.

""Marcus,"" Roman said without looking back.

""Yes, Mr. Vane! Immediately, Mr. Vane!"" the manager cried out, bowing his head so low his chin touched his collar.

""Who holds the commercial lease on this particular floor of the promenade?"" Roman asked smoothly.

""Your umbrella holding company, sir,"" Marcus choked out.

""Vane Global Logistics acquired the master deed to the galleria three months ago.""

Roman nodded once, his eyes never leaving Trevor's twitching face.

""And does our corporate policy permit our commercial tenants to harbor violent felons who assault my wife on our private property?""

The words landed like a twelve-gauge shotgun blast through a plate of glass.

My wife.

Trevor's knees buckled slightly, his mouth opening and closing like a dying fish washed ashore.

""W-wife?"" Trevor gasped, a squeak of absolute terror escaping his throat.

""That's... that's legally impossible.""

""She was a short-order cook at the docks who couldn't afford six hundred dollars for a broken alternator.""

""She has no pedigree, no trust fund, no family connections whatsoever!""

""She had no family,"" Roman said, taking a single, slow step toward Trevor that caused the junior partner to flinch violently.

""Until she took my name.""

""And when someone strikes a member of my household, Trevor, they do not face civil litigation.""

""They face total systemic liquidation.""

Roman raised his right hand slightly, signaling the two charcoal-suited operatives waiting by the fountain.

""Elias,"" Roman commanded quietly.

""Sir,"" the taller operative responded, stepping forward instantly.

""Call Jonathan Sterling at his country club right this second.""

""Inform him that the forty-million-dollar maritime logistics contract his firm desperately needs to avoid bankruptcy is officially canceled.""

""Tell him the cancellation is due to the gross physical misconduct of his junior associate, Trevor Vance.""

""No!"" Trevor screamed, the polished facade shattering entirely into raw, ugly panic.

""No, Mr. Vane, you can't do that!""

""That deal represents our firm's entire fiscal year!""

""If Jonathan loses that capital injection, my career is completely finished!""

""My partnership status is contingent on that closing!""

""Your career was finished the moment your shoe touched her skin,"" Roman whispered, his face deadpan and utterly devoid of mercy.

Roman turned his back on Trevor, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a heavy platinum fountain pen.

He handed it to the trembling boutique manager.

""Marcus, charge the entire autumn inventory of this salon to my private account.""

""Pack every single display item into our estate transport vehicles.""

""And take those rhodium cufflinks my wife was admiring.""

May you like

""Wrap them in a handkerchief.""

""I want to wear them when I attend Sterling Capital's foreclosure proceedings tomorrow morning.""
