Chapter 9 - Desperation in the Gutter

By three o'clock that afternoon, the autumn sky had turned into a bruised, slate-gray sheet of low-hanging clouds.

A bitter, freezing rain began to fall across the glass canyon of the financial district, slicking the asphalt into mirrors of black oil.

Trevor Vance was physically thrown through the revolving brass doors of the Sterling Tower by two building security guards.

He hit the wet sidewalk on his knees, his tailored suit soaked through with freezing gutter water.

His split nose throbbed with blinding, white-hot agony, and the gold chronograph on his wrist had been confiscated by Elias before he was ejected.

Around him, pedestrians in heavy trench coats stepped around his crumpled form, pulling their umbrellas tight and whispering in disgust.

""Hey, buddy, get off the pavement, people are trying to walk here,"" a messenger shouted as a bicycle whizzed past his shoulder.

The words were identical to the ones he had spat at Sadi in the galleria less than twenty-four hours ago.

The poetic symmetry of his humiliation felt like acid burning through his throat.

He had no wallet.

His company credit cards had been terminated by the corporate server while he was being marched down the service stairs.

His leased German sports car had already been seized from the subterranean garage by Roman Vane's repossession team.

He was entirely, utterly destitute.

A heavy black sedan with tinted windows and rusted wheel wells pulled up to the curb, splashing muddy water across Trevor's soaked trousers.

The rear door swung open, revealing the thick, scarred face of Dominic Moretti.

Moretti was not a refined corporate titan like Roman Vane; he was the violent bottom-feeder who ran the illegal numbers games and loan-sharking rackets along the southern rail yards.

""Get in the car, college boy,"" Moretti growled from the shadowed interior.

Trevor scrambled backward on his hands and knees, terror surging through his veins.

""Dominic... please, give me until Monday!"" Trevor pleaded, his teeth chattering uncontrollably from the freezing rain.

""I was going to have the four hundred thousand dollars for your sports book account this morning, but there was an administrative delay!""

""The delay was your firm getting liquidated, you stupid punk,"" Moretti said, reaching out a beefy, leather-gloved arm and dragging Trevor into the backseat by his collar.

The door slammed shut, and the sedan accelerated hard into the wet traffic.

Trevor huddled shivering against the cracked leather seat, clutching his bleeding face.

""Dominic, listen to me, Roman Vane orchestrated this!"" Trevor babbed, desperation driving him into full-blown insanity.

""Vane bought the debt on Sterling Capital to take revenge for his wife!""

""His wife used to be my girlfriend!""

""She's a nobody from the dock wards!""

Moretti turned his head slowly, exhaling a thick cloud of cheap cigar smoke into the cramped car.

""Roman Vane doesn't have a wife,"" Moretti said skeptically.

""He's a ghost who lives on a mountain and kills district attorneys for breakfast.""

""He married her six months ago!"" Trevor screamed, grabbing Moretti's heavy coat with frantic hands.

""I saw them together!""

""He treats her like she's made of solid gold!""

""He took down an entire fifty-story brokerage house just because I kicked her in the galleria!""

Moretti narrowed his small, piggy eyes, a dark, calculating expression crossing his scarred features.

""You're telling me the most untouchable boss in the city has a soft spot?"" Moretti murmured, tapping his cigar against the armrest.

""The Moretti family has been squeezed out of the waterfront shipping containers by Vane's crews for five straight years.""

""He cut our supply lines and threw my cousin into the river.""

""If Vane is acting out of emotional vanity for some diner chick, he's vulnerable for the first time in his life.""

Trevor leaned in closer, his breath coming in hot, foul gasps as the poison in his mind took complete control.

""She's visiting the old maritime dock clinic this afternoon,"" Trevor whispered, his eyes wild with malice.

""I heard her tell Jonathan Sterling that she was going down to Slip 14 to inspect her father's old boat yard before the transfer papers clear.""

""Vane won't expect an assault in the middle of daylight on her old home turf.""

""If we grab her, Dominic... if we take Sadi Hayes, Roman will sign over every shipping terminal on the eastern seaboard to get her back in one piece.""

""And after we get the money?"" Moretti asked, his voice low and dangerous.

""After we get the money, we put a bullet in her skull and leave her in the same mud where her father died,"" Trevor hissed, a grotesque, broken smile spreading across his bloody lips.

""She wanted to act like an empress.""

""Let's show her how peasants bleed.""
