Chapter 5 - The Fortress of Broken Vows

The Maybach ascended the winding, private mountain roads leading to the Vane compound, a fortified modernist fortress perched high above the metropolitan skyline.

Surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls, private security checkpoints, and acres of ancient pine trees, the estate was an impenetrable sanctuary.

Sadi leaned her head back against the leather headrest, closing her eyes as the vehicle passed through the reinforced steel gates.

Her right leg was stiff now, the muscle tightening around the hematoma until every minor shift of her weight sent sharp spikes of agony into her hip.

When the car came to a complete stop beneath the limestone portico, Roman was out of his door before the chauffeur could even step onto the gravel.

He lifted Sadi again without asking, carrying her through the towering mahogany entrance doors.

The household staff stood in silent, bowed formations along the grand foyer, their eyes cast downward in disciplined respect.

""Fetch Dr. Bennett to the master suite immediately,"" Roman commanded the head housekeeper as he walked toward the grand staircase.

""And bring an ice pack and fresh compression wraps.""

""Right away, Mr. Vane,"" the housekeeper replied, hurrying down the corridor.

Roman carried Sadi into their private quarters—a sprawling suite of minimalist glass, dark walnut wood, and floor-to-ceiling views of the glittering city below.

He laid her down gently on the king-sized bed, unlacing her white sneakers with his own hands and pulling them free.

He carefully rolled her denim jeans up past her knee, revealing the full extent of the damage.

The bruise had deepened into a hideous, dark plum shade, with a distinct rectangular outline marking the hard edge of Trevor's designer heel.

Roman's jaw clenched with such intensity that a vein pulsed violently along his temple.

""He kicked you with full force,"" Roman observed, his voice dangerously low.

""He wanted to break the bone.""

""Trevor always liked hitting things that couldn't hit back,"" Sadi said, staring up at the vaulted ceiling.

""When my mother was in the final stages of hospice, our landlord threatened to throw her onto the sidewalk because we were two hundred dollars short.""

""I went to Trevor's fraternity house in the middle of a storm to beg him for help.""

""He was hosting a champagne party with his new corporate friends.""

""He pulled me into the alleyway behind the house, shoved me into the garbage bins, and told me that associating with poverty was bad for his personal brand.""

""I stayed in that alley for two hours crying before I walked four miles back to the hospital.""

Roman did not interrupt her.

He sat on the edge of the mattress, holding her cold, bare foot in his warm hands, absorbing every word of her past trauma like dry earth soaking up poisoned rain.

""Why didn't you ever tell me his name before today?"" Roman asked gently.

""Because I wanted him to be dead to me,"" Sadi replied, a lone tear finally escaping her eye and tracing a path down her cheek.

""I didn't want his ghost living in your house.""

""I wanted to believe that if I worked hard enough, if I learned how to breathe in this vast mansion, the dirt he threw on me would just blow away.""

""Dirt does not blow away on its own, Sadi,"" Roman said, leaning down to press a soft, deliberate kiss to her forehead.

""It has to be excavated and burned.""

A discreet knock sounded at the double doors.

Dr. Bennett, Roman's trusted private physician, entered carrying a leather medical kit, followed by Elias, who held a thick manila folder.

""Examine her leg, Arthur,"" Roman ordered, stepping aside to give the physician room to work.

""Check for hairline fractures in the tibia.""

While Dr. Bennett gently applied an anti-inflammatory gel and examined the bone structure, Roman gestured for Elias to step out onto the private terrace.

Sadi watched through the glass doors as the two men stood against the stone balustrade under the gathering dusk.

Elias opened the manila folder, handing Roman several glossy photographs and financial printouts.

Even from inside the bedroom, Sadi could see the absolute, terrifying stillness that settled over Roman's posture.

He wasn't merely angry; he was orchestrating an annihilation.

Ten minutes later, Dr. Bennett wrapped Sadi's calf in a high-grade compression sleeve and administered a mild, non-drowsy painkiller.

""No structural fractures, Mrs. Vane,"" the doctor said warmly.

""Severe deep-tissue contusion, but with proper rest and ice, the swelling will subside within seventy-two hours.""

""Thank you, Doctor,"" Sadi said with genuine gratitude.

As the physician packed his instruments and departed, Roman stepped back inside the suite, the cool mountain breeze trailing off his dark wool coat.

He held a single printed sheet of paper between his fingers.

""Elias's investigative team is remarkably efficient,"" Roman said, pulling an armchair over to the side of the bed and sitting down.

""It turns out your former partner, Mr. Trevor Vance, has been living a rather precarious double life.""

Sadi looked at him curiously.

""What do you mean?""

""Trevor didn't secure his position at Sterling Capital through brilliant financial analysis,"" Roman said, a cold, mocking smile touching the corner of his lips.

""He secured it by forging his academic credentials from Columbia University.""

""And more importantly, by embezzling client escrow funds to pay for his bespoke suits, his leased sports cars, and his lavish engagement ring for Chloe Sterling.""

""He stole from his own firm?"" Sadi asked, her eyes widening.

""He has been running a miniature Ponzi scheme within their private wealth division for eighteen months,"" Roman explained smoothly.

""He was counting on closing our maritime logistics contract tomorrow morning to secure a multi-million-dollar performance bonus.""

""A bonus he desperately needed to plug the two-million-dollar hole in his client accounts before the annual state audit on Friday.""

Roman folded the paper neatly and slipped it into his breast pocket.

""Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock, Jonathan Sterling has called an emergency board meeting to beg for our contract's reinstatement.""

""Trevor Vance has promised the board that he can personally smooth over this 'minor domestic misunderstanding' with me.""

May you like

Roman reached out and gently brushed a stray lock of hair behind Sadi's ear.

""I think it would be wonderfully therapeutic if you accompanied me to that meeting, Mrs. Vane.""
