Chapter 6 - The Penthouse Guillotine

The executive boardroom of Sterling Capital sat on the fiftieth floor of the city's most prestigious glass skyscraper, offering a panoramic view of the harbor below.
Inside the mahogany-paneled room, the atmosphere was thick with absolute panic, sweat, and cheap corporate desperation.
Jonathan Sterling, the silver-haired chief executive and Chloe's father, paced back and forth across the Persian rug like a caged beast.
""Are you completely out of your mind, Trevor?"" Jonathan roared, slamming his heavy fist down onto the polished conference table.
""You assaulted Roman Vane's wife in the middle of a public shopping galleria?""
""Do you have any earthly idea who that man is?""
""He doesn't just manage logistics; he controls the fuel lines, the municipal dock workers, and the debt notes on every single asset our firm owns!""
Trevor sat at the far end of the table, his eyes bloodshot, his navy suit wrinkled from a sleepless night spent pacing his leased apartment.
His fingers drummed erratically against the leather folder in front of him.
""Jonathan, please, you have to listen to reason!"" Trevor pleaded, his voice cracking with hysteria.
""It is a complete, manufactured setup!""
""That woman is Sadi Hayes—a destitute, uneducated waitress who used to clean my apartment three years ago!""
""She is an opportunistic gold digger who somehow seduced Roman Vane after I discarded her!""
""She orchestrated that entire scene at the boutique specifically to humiliate me and ruin our deal!""
""Shut your mouth!"" Jonathan barked, pointing a trembling finger at Trevor's face.
""I don't care if she was a gutter sweep from the industrial district!""
""She is wearing a three-million-dollar Vane family diamond on her finger, which makes her untouchable!""
""If Roman pulls his financing today, the federal regulators will descend on our accounts by noon!""
""We are leveraged to our eyeballs, Trevor!""
""If this meeting fails, I am ruined, my daughter is ruined, and you will be facing twenty years in state prison for corporate insolvency!""
Chloe sat in the corner of the room, her designer sunglasses pushed up onto her blonde hair, weeping silently into a silk handkerchief.
""Daddy, he told me she was a nobody,"" Chloe sobbed.
""He told me he kicked a crazy homeless person!""
""He lied to me about everything!""
""Chloe, stop it!"" Trevor snapped, turning violently toward her.
""I did this for us!""
""I climbed out of the dirt so you could have your private country club weddings and your summer villas!""
""Don't you dare turn your back on me now!""
""Enough!"" Jonathan screamed, checking his gold wristwatch with terrified eyes.
""It's ten o'clock.""
""The security desk downstairs just notified me that Mr. Vane's convoy has entered the private underground bay.""
""Trevor, you will stand when he enters.""
""You will drop to your knees if necessary.""
""You will apologize to that man and his wife until your vocal cords bleed.""
""If you do not salvage this contract today, I swear to God I will personally hand over your personal accounting files to the district attorney.""
Before Trevor could formulate a response, the heavy frosted-glass double doors of the boardroom clicked open.
Two armed, dark-suited security guards stepped through first, securing the perimeter with chilling, military discipline.
Then, the room's temperature seemed to plunge twenty degrees.
Roman Vane stepped through the threshold.
He was dressed in a bespoke charcoal-black three-piece suit, cut with razor-sharp precision, completely dominating the immense room.
Fastened securely to his French cuffs were the exact rhodium cufflinks Sadi had looked at yesterday, catching the harsh morning sunlight like polished blades.
Walking beside him, her hand tucked securely into the crook of his arm, was Sadi.
She wore a breathtaking, tailored ivory silk pantsuit that draped over her slender frame with effortless, quiet majesty.
Her dark hair was swept up into an elegant, aristocratic chignon, exposing the delicate line of her neck and a pair of flawless teardrop diamond earrings.
She did not limp.
She walked with the serene, untouchable grace of an empress inspecting an occupied territory.
Trevor stared at her, his jaw dropping open in utter disbelief.
The ghost of the exhausted, grease-stained diner girl was completely, undeniably gone.
In her place stood the terrifying, radiant matriarch of the city's most feared empire.
Jonathan Sterling immediately rushed forward, bowing his head frantically, his hand trembling as he extended it toward Roman.
""Mr. Vane! Mrs. Vane! Welcome, welcome to Sterling Capital.""
""Words cannot express the profound, humiliating regret our entire board feels regarding yesterday's unfortunate incident.""
Roman did not shake Jonathan's hand.
He guided Sadi directly to the head of the conference table—to the grand leather armchair traditionally reserved for the chairman of the board.
Roman pulled the chair out with effortless chivalry.
""Sit here, my love,"" Roman said softly.
Sadi took her seat at the head of the table, resting her hands flat on the polished mahogany, looking directly down the long expanse of wood at Trevor.
Roman did not sit.
He remained standing directly behind her right shoulder, an immovable wall of shadow and power, resting one hand lightly on the back of her chair.
His dark, predatory eyes slowly shifted down the table until they pinned Trevor Vance to his seat like an insect under a microscope.
""Now then, Jonathan,"" Roman said, his deep baritone cutting through the suffocating silence of the boardroom.
""You requested this emergency conference to present an argument for why Sterling Capital should remain solvent.""
""We are listening.""
""However, before you begin your presentation...""
Roman reached into his breast pocket and produced a thick, stamped red legal dossier, dropping it onto the table in front of Sadi with a heavy, final thud.
""My wife has a few administrative questions regarding Mr. Vance's personal accounting ledgers.""" "CHAPTER 7 — The Balance Due
The crimson folder rested against the dark mahogany table like a slab of cold granite.
Sadi reached out with her right hand, her fingers steady and unhurried as she broke the embossed wax seal.
The sound of tearing paper seemed to echo off the fifty-story glass windows like the cocking of a firearm.
Trevor Vance swallowed hard, his throat clicking audibly in the suffocating quiet of the boardroom.
He looked at the manicured nails of the woman sitting at the apex of the corporate table.
Those hands had once scrubbed greasy grease traps until midnight just to buy him prep-course study guides.
Now, those same fingers were turning through pages of certified forensic financial audits bearing the crest of the federal treasury.
""Shall we review the timeline of your meteoric ascent, Mr. Vance?"" Sadi asked, her voice calm, melodious, and terrifyingly clear.
She did not look up from the first page.
""In June of three years ago, a student living in an unheated flat on 4th Avenue vanished overnight.""
""He took seven hundred dollars from a ceramic cookie jar in the kitchen pantry.""
""That money had been set aside to pay the overdue oxygen tank rental for a dying woman.""
Jonathan Sterling turned his head sharply, staring at Trevor with eyes that were beginning to burn with cold disbelief.
""What is she talking about, Trevor?"" Jonathan demanded under his breath.
""It's fiction, Jonathan, she's spinning theatrical lies to embarrass me!"" Trevor hissed, his collar soaking through with greasy sweat.
Sadi turned the page with a deliberate, rustling flick of her wrist.
""The student used that stolen seven hundred dollars to buy a counterfeit transcript from an offshore diploma mill.""
""He purchased a second-hand suit from a thrift store and paid a hacker fifty dollars to insert his name into the alumni database of Columbia University.""
""Here is the IP log from the server room, Trevor.""
""And here is the receipt signed with your personal bank debit card.""
Jonathan Sterling lunged forward, snatching the photocopy directly off the table.
His silver eyebrows shot straight into his hairline as his reading glasses slipped down the bridge of his nose.
""You never graduated from Columbia?"" Jonathan whispered, the fury in his voice trembling with venomous rage.
""You told my board you were top five percent of the business school class of twenty-one!""
""I vetted your credentials through the advisory panel!""
""He bribed the junior clerk in your human resources screening department, Jonathan,"" Roman Vane spoke from behind Sadi's shoulder.
Roman had not shifted his stance by an inch.
His hands remained resting gently on the back of his wife's leather armchair, his posture that of an emperor watching an insect twitch in a web.
""Cost him five thousand dollars,"" Roman continued smoothly.
""Five thousand dollars that Trevor withdrew from Sterling Capital's municipal bond escrow account during his second month on the payroll.""
Chloe Sterling let out a broken, ragged sob from the corner of the room.
""Trevor... you promised me you were an heir to a Connecticut real estate dynasty,"" she wept, covering her face.
""You told my father your family trust was held in blind escrow until our wedding day!""
Trevor sprang to his feet, knocking his heavy leather chair backward until it crashed against the baseboard.
""Shut up, all of you!"" Trevor screamed, his eyes wildly rolling in their sockets as he jabbed a shaking finger at Sadi.
""You think you're clever because you crawled into a gangster's bed?""
""You were nothing until I gave you the privilege of cleaning up after me!""
""You were a pathetic, fatherless dock girl whose mother rotted away in a charity ward!""
Roman did not shout.
He did not reach inside his tailored suit for a weapon.
He simply tilted his chin downward by a fraction of an inch toward the double doors.
Elias moved across the room with the blinding speed of a lunging panther.
Before Trevor could draw another breath to insult Sadi, Elias's heavy hand seized him by the throat and drove his head down into the polished wood of the conference table.
The sickening crack of Trevor's nose meeting the solid mahogany sent a spray of scarlet across the white quarterly balance sheets.
Trevor shrieked in agony, his legs kicking violently under the table as Elias pinned him down with casual, one-armed brutality.
""You will lower your tone in the presence of Mrs. Vane,"" Elias murmured, his face expressionless.
Jonathan Sterling scrambled backward in his chair, his hands raised in surrender.
""Please, Mr. Vane, please!"" the older executive begged, his voice shaking like a child's.
""We had no knowledge of his fraudulent background!""
""Sterling Capital is a respected, century-old institution!""
""We were victimized by this charlatan just as your lovely wife was!""
Sadi turned the final page of the dossier, looking down at the bloody mess of Trevor's face pinned against the wood.
""You weren't victimized by him, Jonathan,"" Sadi said quietly, closing the red cover with a gentle click.
May you like
""You enabled him.""
""And now, we are going to talk about what happened fifteen years ago at the municipal docks.""
