Chapter 12 - Shadows In The Nursery: The Final Threat Neutralized

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and bruised orange over the grand Bellandi estate.
Inside the fortified nursery on the second floor, little Emma sat cross-legged on a plush pink rug, coloring in a picture book with bright red and yellow crayons.
Mrs. Higgins sat comfortably in a rocking chair nearby, knitting a warm woolen scarf while keeping a watchful, protective eye on the child.
Outside the heavy oak nursery door, two of Commander Vance’s elite tactical operatives stood guard in the dimly lit hallway, their carbines held at the ready.
Suddenly, the motion-triggered thermal security monitors mounted along the corridor walls flashed a silent, amber warning light.
One of the operatives pressed his comm-link earpiece, listening closely as the automated perimeter sensors picked up an anomalous thermal signature near the east wing balcony.
“Command, this is Sector Two. We have movement on the exterior terrace. Looks like a lone climber scaling the ivy wall,” the operative whispered urgently into his mic.
“Hold your position. Do not engage until visual is confirmed,” Vance’s voice crackled back instantly through the encrypted comm-channel.
Inside the nursery, Emma looked up from her coloring book, tilting her head slightly as a faint scratching sound echoed against the thick exterior glass of the balcony doors.
“Mrs. Higgins? Is that Daddy coming home through the window?” the little girl asked innocently, pointing toward the heavy velvet drapes covering the terrace entrance.
Mrs. Higgins stopped knitting, her face turning pale as she instantly recognized that no father would ever scale the exterior balcony walls like a common intruder.
“Stay right here, sweetheart. Go hide behind the toy chest,” Mrs. Higgins instructed firmly, her voice trembling as she stood up from her rocking chair.
Before the elderly nanny could cross the room to lock the balcony doors, the glass shattered violently inward in a shower of glittering shards.
A dark, masked figure vaulted through the broken window frames, landing silently on the hardwood floor with a heavy, tactical thud.
It was a lone assassin sent by the remnants of Sterling Capital, desperate to eliminate the final bloodline of the Bellandi family in a last-ditch act of revenge.
The intruder raised a silenced pistol, aiming directly toward the corner of the room where little Emma was cowering behind the toy chest.
Mrs. Higgins didn’t hesitate; with incredible bravery, she lunged forward, throwing her elderly body directly into the path of the assassin to shield the child.
Before the gunman could adjust his aim or fire, the nursery door was kicked off its hinges with a thunderous crash that shook the entire wing.
Commander Vance and his tactical team swarmed into the room like a pack of hunting wolves, their weapons instantly locked on the intruder.
“Drop the weapon or die!” Vance roared, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger of his carbine.
The assassin realized he was completely trapped and tried to swing his pistol toward Vance, but he was too late.
Three suppressed carbines fired simultaneously, neutralizing the threat with surgical precision as the gunman collapsed heavily to the nursery floor.
The room fell dead silent, save for the faint sound of Emma crying softly behind the toy chest and the ringing echoes of gunfire fading down the hall.
Vincent burst through the ruined doorway seconds later, his face pale with absolute terror as he scanned the room for his daughter.
“Emma! Emma, are you hurt?” Vincent cried out, dropping to his knees and pulling the trembling little girl into his arms.
“I’m okay, Daddy… Mrs. Higgins saved me,” Emma wept quietly into his shoulder, pointing toward the brave nanny who was shaken but unharmed.
Vincent looked up at Vance, his eyes burning with a fierce, protective rage that promised total annihilation to anyone who ever dared cross his threshold again.

“Sweep the entire estate perimeter. I want every square inch sanitized, and I want to know who ordered this hit before the night is over,” Vincent commanded coldly.
The war for the Bellandi estate was finally, truly over, and Vincent had secured his family’s safety with absolute, unyielding dominance.
