Chapter 1 - THE MIDNIGHT RESCUE THAT SHATTERED AN EMPIRE

The roaring flams of the great hall fireplace snapped and hissed, casting long, frantic shadows across the polished marble floor of the Moretti estate. Outside, the blizzard howled like a wounded beast, hurling sheets of ice against the reinforced French doors, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with a terrifying, breathless silence. No one dared to move. The 12 ruthless captains and lieutenants of the Moretti crime family sat frozen in their seats, staring in disbelief at the scene unfolding before them. Lorenzo Moretti knelt on the expensive Persian rug, his custom Italian suit soaked through with freezing slush, cradling the unconscious form of Elara Vance against his chest.

Elara’s skin was the color of fresh marble, her lips tinted a terrifying shade of blue, and her eyelashes matted with frost. She looked unimaginably fragile, like a broken bird caught in the middle of a warzone. Lorenzo’s heart pounded against his ribs with a fury he had not felt since the brutal Chicago turf wars of his youth. He pressed two fingers against her throat, searching desperately for a pulse. For a agonizing second, there was nothing. Then, a weak, erratic thud fluttered beneath his fingertips. She was alive, but barely hanging onto this world by a frayed thread.

"Doctor Vance is arriving through the east gates now, Boss!" shouted Mateo, one of Lorenzo’s most trusted enforcers, bursting into the hall with snow dusting his shoulders.

"Bring him straight here. If he is delayed by a single second, break every bone in his hands," Lorenzo ordered, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register that made the seasoned killers in the room swallow hard.

Across the room, Camila Rossi stood paralyzed. Her blood-red silk dress felt suddenly suffocating. She looked at the wet, muddy footprints ruining her fiancé’s priceless rug, then at the girl who had dared to disrupt her evening. Anger, fueled by humiliation and unchecked arrogance, flared back up through her shock. She stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the stone.

"Lorenzo, this is absurd," Camila scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest, forcing a brittle, defensive smile. "You are halting a multi-million-dollar family dinner and making a dramatic spectacle over a hired domestic? She’s a nobody. She lost my diamond earring because she was careless. Let the staff deal with her. Come back to the table before the roast gets cold."

Lorenzo did not look up. He carefully transferred Elara into the warm wool blanket Mateo had rushed over with, his hands steady and gentle, completely contradicting the lethal aura radiating from his broad shoulders. When he finally rose to his feet, he towered over Camila, his dark eyes devoid of any human warmth. The air in the room grew so cold it seemed the blizzard had somehow breached the walls.

"Camila," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Get out of my sight."

"Excuse me?" Camila’s jaw dropped. "I am your betrothed! My father’s ships are carrying half your contraband across the Atlantic! You do not speak to me like—"

"Stefano," Lorenzo interrupted, never breaking eye contact with her.

"Yes, Boss?" the consigliere stepped forward instantly.

"Lock the front gates. Confiscate every phone belonging to the Rossi delegation. No one leaves this estate tonight. What happens next is no longer a family dinner. It is a trial."
