Chapter 7 - A NEW ORDER IN NEW YORK

Three months later, the spring thaw had transformed the grounds of the Moretti estate into a vibrant landscape of blooming gardens and emerald lawns. The trauma of that brutal Christmas night had long since faded into syndicate history, replaced by a new, unshakable reality. The alliance with Chicago had been renegotiated under terms heavily favorable to New York, and Donato Rossi had formally apologized for his daughter’s behavior, keeping the peace intact.

Inside the grand dining room where Elara had once poured wine with trembling hands, a very different meeting was taking place. Twelve high-ranking lieutenants and captains sat around the long mahogany table, but the chair at the right hand of the boss—a seat previously reserved for visiting dignitaries and dangerous underbosses—was now occupied by someone entirely unexpected.

Elara Vance sat upright in a tailored charcoal-grey business suit, her posture confident, her eyes sharp and clear. Gone was the fearful maid in the black uniform. In her place was Lorenzo Moretti’s newly appointed Chief of Operations and Financial Auditor, a woman who now controlled the syndicate’s legitimate business fronts, real estate investments, and charitable foundations.

"Reviewing the fiscal reports from the last quarter," Elara spoke clearly, addressing the veteran mob captains with an authority that commanded absolute respect in the room, "we find that three of our front companies in Brooklyn have been leaking funds through inflated supply chain costs. I’ve already restructured the contracts and audited the payroll."

One of the older captains, a grizzled veteran named Sal who had questioned Elara’s presence from day one, crossed his arms and grunted. "With all due respect, Miss Vance, corporate auditing is a bit different from running domestic staff. These are hardened operations."

Before Elara could answer, Lorenzo raised a hand, silencing the table instantly. He leaned back in his leather chair at the head of the table, his dark eyes resting on Elara with a mixture of profound respect and unmistakable warmth.

"Miss Vance’s audits just uncovered two embezzlers within our own ranks who had been skimming profits for over two years," Lorenzo said smoothly, his gaze shifting back to Sal. "If she can manage this syndicate's finances the way she managed my household under impossible conditions, I suggest you listen very carefully to every word she says."

Sal grumbled under his breath and nodded slowly, jotting down notes in his ledger.

When the meeting concluded and the captains filed out of the room one by one, Elara remained seated at the table, gathering her documents into a neat leather portfolio. The afternoon sunlight streamed through the tall French windows, casting a warm golden glow across the polished wood.

"You were brilliant in there today," Lorenzo said quietly, walking over and leaning against the edge of the table near her.

Elara looked up, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips—a smile that bore no resemblance to the frightened expressions she used to wear. "I learned from the best teacher in New York. Though I must admit... corporate restructuring is much warmer than shoveling snow on a west terrace."

Lorenzo chuckled, a rich, deep sound that rarely escaped him. "I still maintain that was the second-best decision I ever made."

"Oh?" Elara raised an eyebrow playfully. "And what was the first?"
