Chapter 3 - THE CRACK IN THE ALLIANCE

Downstairs in the grand dining room, the festive atmosphere had completely disintegrated into a tense, claustrophobic prison. The 12 lieutenants and captains sat in uneasy silence, whispering among themselves while the armed enforcers stationed at every exit made it abundantly clear that leaving was not an option. At the head of the table, Camila Rossi was pacing back and forth across the floor like a caged tigress, her diamond-encrusted bracelets clinking loudly in the quiet room.

"This is completely insane!" Camila snapped, turning on Stefano, who stood calmly by the mahogany double doors with his hands folded neatly behind his back. "Your boss is locking us in here over a servant girl! Do you have any idea who my father is? Donato Rossi would wipe the floor with this entire estate if he knew I was being treated like a hostage!"

"Mr. Rossi is currently in Chicago, Miss Rossi," Stefano replied smoothly, his tone entirely devoid of emotion. "And Mr. Moretti is the head of this table. I suggest you sit down and wait for him."

"I will do no such thing!" Camila shrieked, marching up to the doors and trying to turn the heavy brass handle. It was locked from the outside. She slammed her fists against the wood in pure frustration. "Open these doors right now, or you will regret the day you were born!"

The heavy oak doors suddenly clicked open, but it wasn't Stefano or his men who entered. It was Lorenzo. He walked into the room with slow, deliberate strides, his jacket removed, his white dress shirt slightly wrinkled from carrying Elara upstairs. The sheer weight of his presence sucked all the air out of the room. Every captain and lieutenant straightened up instinctively.

Camila spun around, her face flushed with a mixture of righteous fury and sudden, creeping anxiety. "Lorenzo! Thank God. End this childish game immediately. Send for our drivers, and let’s get out of this freezing dungeon. My father needs to hear about this insult."

Lorenzo stopped a few feet away from her. He did not raise his voice. He didn't need to. "The alliance between the Moretti family and the Chicago Outfit was built on mutual respect, business acumen, and strict codes of conduct," Lorenzo began, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. "It was never meant to be a license for casual sadism under my roof."

Camila forced a harsh, nervous laugh. "Are you seriously lecturing me about business codes over a maid? She’s trash, Lorenzo! She exists to serve us! I wanted to test her loyalty, and she failed!"

"She is a human being," Lorenzo countered sharply, taking another step forward. "A human being who nearly froze to death in a life-threatening blizzard because you wanted to stroke your pathetic ego and hide your own clumsiness."

"I am your future wife!" Camila screamed, losing all pretense of composure. "You cannot talk to me like this! Without my father’s shipping routes, your ports in New York will dry up in six months! You need me!"

May you like

"I need no one," Lorenzo said coldly. "And as of tonight, the engagement is terminated."

The entire dining room gasped. Several captains dropped their forks against their plates with audible clatter. To break an alliance of this magnitude was an open invitation to an all-out syndicate war. Camila stared at him, her eyes wide with absolute horror and disbelief, realizing with sickening clarity that he meant every single word.
