Chapter 5 - AWAKENING IN THE LIONS' DEN

Back at the Moretti estate, the storm raged on outside, but inside the master bedroom, the atmosphere was warm and quiet. Elara opened her eyes slowly, the pounding in her head having subsided into a dull ache. She looked around in confusion. She wasn't in the cramped servants' quarters in the basement; she was lying in an enormous, mahogany-framed bed draped in silk and velvet sheets. A crackling fire burned brightly in the marble fireplace across the room, casting a golden glow over the antique furniture.

"You're awake. Good."

Elara flinched and turned her head. Lorenzo sat in an armchair by the fireplace, reading a leather-bound financial report with a cup of black coffee in his hand. He had changed into a fresh charcoal turtleneck and dark slacks, looking impossibly calm considering the syndicate war he had just triggered downstairs.

"Mr. Moretti..." Elara whispered, her voice still hoarse. She immediately tried to push herself up, clutching the blanket tightly around her chest. "Why am I... where am I? Did Miss Rossi fire me? Am I in trouble?"

"You are in my bedroom, Elara," Lorenzo said, setting his coffee cup down and standing up. He walked over to the bed, his presence commanding yet unexpectedly gentle as he poured a glass of warm water from a crystal pitcher on the nightstand and handed it to her. "Drink this. Slowly."

Elara took the glass with trembling hands, taking small, grateful sips. "I don't understand... I failed my task. I couldn't find the earring. Miss Rossi said—"

"Miss Rossi is no longer a concern of anyone in this house," Lorenzo interrupted smoothly, pulling up a chair and sitting beside the bed. "The engagement is canceled. She and her father’s associates are currently locked in the west parlor waiting for the roads to clear so they can be escorted back to Chicago permanently."

Elara stopped drinking, her eyes wide with shock. "Canceled? Because of... because of me? Mr. Moretti, you can't do that! Her family controls the shipping lines! You'll ruin your business, you'll make powerful enemies—"

"My business is my concern, Elara," Lorenzo said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch. "For six months, you have worked in my home. You’ve endured cruelty without complaint, sent every spare dollar you earned to protect your family, and risked your life tonight because you were terrified of losing the only shelter you had left. And all the while, I watched my guests treat you like less than human."

Elara lowered her gaze, a blush of deep embarrassment burning across her cheeks. "It was just my job, sir. People in my position don't have the luxury of pride."

"Pride is a luxury," Lorenzo agreed softly. "Dignity is a right. And no one under my roof will ever be stripped of theirs again."

Before Elara could process his words, a soft knock came at the bedroom door, and Marco entered, holding a thick manila envelope. He stopped respectfully near the doorway, bowing his head slightly when he saw Elara awake.

"Boss," Marco said quietly. "The operation in Queens is handled. Marcone’s assets have been seized, and his debt ledgers have been permanently erased. Here are the original physical promissory notes for your father’s loan, Miss Vance."

Marco walked over and placed the envelope gently on Elara’s bedside table. Elara stared at it, her hands trembling violently as she reached out and pulled the flap open. Inside were the original signed contracts, stamped with a large red VOID across every single page. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over her lashes and tracking down her pale cheeks in silent, overwhelming relief.
