Chapter 4 - THE SHADOWS OF QUEENS

While the tension inside the Moretti estate reached a boiling point, another scene was playing out miles away in the heart of Queens. Despite the raging blizzard burying New York City under four feet of snow, a convoy of three black armored SUVs plowed through the drifts, turning down a dimly lit industrial street lined with dilapidated warehouses. This was the territory of Vincent "The Butcher" Marcone, a ruthless loan shark who thrived on human misery and despair.

Inside the primary warehouse, Marcone sat at a metal desk counting cash under a flickering fluorescent light, surrounded by three heavily armed thugs. Suddenly, the heavy metal rolling door of the warehouse was blown open with a deafening crash as an SUV bumper smashed right through the locks. Frigid wind rushed into the building, blowing papers across the floor.

"What the hell is this?!" Marcone roared, jumping to his feet and grabbing a shotgun from his desk. "Who’s stupid enough to—"

Before he could finish his sentence, a dozen heavily armed Moretti enforcers poured out of the vehicles, weapons drawn and laser sights painting red dots across the chests of Marcone and his men. The local thugs dropped their weapons instantly, recognizing the silver-and-black crest embroidered on the tactical jackets of the elite Moretti hit squad.

Marco, the elderly cook from the Moretti estate who had slipped out through the kitchens under Lorenzo’s secret orders, stepped out from the lead vehicle, pulling his heavy parka tight against the cold. He looked older and grimmer than he ever did in the kitchen.

"Mr. Marcone," Marco said calmly, walking toward the desk.

"Marco? What is this bullshit?" Marcone sneered, trying to mask his panic. "I pay my monthly tribute to the Moretti family on time every single month! What right do you have breaking into my property?"

"You've been collecting interest on an account belonging to Arthur Vance's family," Marco said, pulling a thick stack of digital transaction records from his coat pocket and slamming them onto the desk. "You doubled the interest rate illegally last month, threatening violence against a young woman working under Mr. Moretti's direct protection."

"She owes the debt!" Marcone yelled, backing away. "Her old man borrowed forty grand before he kicked the bucket! It’s business!"

"It was business," a cold, synthesized voice echoed through the warehouse’s intercom system.

Marcone froze, looking up at the security speakers mounted on the wall. It was Lorenzo, patched in via a secure encrypted line from the estate.

"Mr... Mr. Moretti," Marcone stammered, sweating despite the freezing temperature in the room. "I didn't know she had your protection. Swear to God, if I knew—"

"You didn't care whose protection she had," Lorenzo’s voice cut through the speakers, dripping with ice. "You preyed on the desperate, broke the rules of our syndicate, and threatened someone living under my roof. Marco, clear out every single asset in this building. Burn the debt ledgers. And as for Marcone..." Lorenzo paused for a chilling second. "Take everything he owns, strip him of his territory, and throw him out into the blizzard with the clothes on his back. Let’s see how long his money keeps him warm."
