Chapter 2 - THE SCARS BENEATH THE UNIFORM

Upstairs in the master wing of the Moretti mansion, the private physician worked feverishly under Lorenzo's unblinking watch. Dr. Sterling had treated gunshot wounds, knife slashes, and trauma from high-speed car chases for the syndicate for over two decades, but treating severe stage-three hypothermia on a malnourished young woman hit him with a different kind of gravity. He sliced away Elara’s frozen black uniform, revealing the stark, painful reality of her daily existence. Beneath the standard-issue fabric, her body was shockingly thin, bearing the physical toll of grueling 16-hour shifts, chronic stress, and deep physical exhaustion.
As the medical team applied warmed intravenous fluids and thermal blankets, Lorenzo stood by the window, staring out into the blinding white fury of the storm. His mind raced back through the intelligence files his organization kept on everyone who entered his orbit. He knew everything about his employees, but for the first time, he felt a crushing wave of guilt for what he had overlooked.
"She has multiple old contusions on her ribs and forearms, Boss," Dr. Sterling murmured quietly, keeping his voice low so as not to disturb the unconscious girl. "And look at her palms. They aren't just blistered from the cold tonight. They're scarred from hard labor, long before she ever set foot in this house."
Lorenzo clenched his jaw so tightly a muscle ticked in his cheek. He walked over to the mahogany desk in the corner of the room where Elara’s personal belongings—collected from her modest quarters in the servants' wing—had been placed by a cautious maid. Among them was a worn leather notebook, its pages filled with neat, meticulous handwriting. Lorenzo flipped it open. It wasn't a diary; it was a ledger of debt. Column after column of numbers, interest rates, and predatory loan payments owed to a notorious Queens loan shark named Vincent "The Butcher" Marcone.
"She’s been draining every cent of her salary," Lorenzo realized aloud, his voice rough. "She’s paying off her late father’s gambling debts to keep her younger brother safe from Marcone’s enforcers."
"Marcone operates out of our territory on 4th Street," Stefano noted, stepping quietly into the room. "He’s a low-life. We usually let small-time loan sharks work independently as long as they pay their tax to the family, but if he’s bleeding our staff dry..."
"He was bleeding my house," Lorenzo corrected, turning around with an expression that promised absolute devastation. "Find out where Marcone is tonight. Every single location he owns. By sunrise, I want his entire operation dismantled piece by piece."
On the bed, Elara stirred. A soft, pained gasp slipped past her lips as her eyes fluttered open, fighting against the heavy fog of exhaustion and cold. She blinked against the warm lamplight, her gaze frantically searching the unfamiliar, luxurious surroundings until they landed on the imposing figure standing at the foot of her bed. Panic flooded her wide eyes.

"Mr... Mr. Moretti," she stammered, her voice raspy and weak as she tried to sit up, instantly wincing in pain. "I... I'm so sorry. I couldn't find the earring. The snow was too deep, I lost the shawl, I'm so sorry, please don't fire me—"
"Lie back down, Elara," Lorenzo commanded, stepping closer. There was no anger in his voice, only an intense, magnetic focus that made her stop trembling from fear. "You are safe in this house. And as for the earring..." Lorenzo reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a small, sparkling diamond drop, tossing it casually onto the nightstand. "It was never lost on the terrace. Camila dropped it behind the sofa in the drawing room three days ago. She just wanted to see if you would break."
