Chapter 12 - The Fall of the House of Bellini

The heavy rear doors creaked open, and two Moretti sentries led Vanessa Bellini into the ballroom.

The socialite looked entirely ruined.

Her extravagant crimson gown was crumpled and torn at the hem.

Her hair was tangled, and her face was stained with dried tears and smudged eyeliner.

She did not look at the Council of Elders; she could not even bear to look at the wedding dress in Emma’s arms.

Arthur took an aggressive step toward his daughter, his walking cane striking the floor with a sharp crack.

"Vanessa, don't say a single word until my legal team speaks with you!" Arthur commanded in a harsh rasp.

Luca did not move an inch, but Marco stepped between Arthur and the girl, his hand resting on the hilt of a tactical knife.

"Speak, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice flat and calm.

"Tell the Elders why you hired Carl Miller’s incinerator truck to arrive at my estate at midnight."

Vanessa sank onto an empty leather chair at the edge of the room, her body trembling violently.

"I... I had to," Vanessa choked out, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Louder, young lady," Don Salvatore commanded with the terrifying weight of his eighty years.

Vanessa lifted her tear-drenched eyes to the Council.

"My father ordered me to search the storage rooms after our engagement party," she wept.

"He told me that Elena Moretti had kept the original maritime audit manifests from ten years ago inside the false bottom of her cedar wedding chest."

"He said those manifests proved he had embezzled fifty million dollars from the Great Lakes freight alliance."

"He told me that if Luca ever held that wedding gown again, he would find the hidden compartment and discover the forgery."

"So I... I used dressmaker shears to ruin the lace hem."

Vanessa raised a trembling hand toward the dress Emma was holding.

"I pretended I was making a veil out of it so Luca would think I was just being selfish and vain."

"I ordered Emma to throw the rest in the dumpster so it would be hauled away before dawn."

"And when Emma refused... I paid the driver fifty thousand dollars to burn the cedar chest, the journals, and the six crates of Elena's files in an industrial kiln before morning."

A collective intake of breath echoed through the grand room.

Arthur Bellini looked at his daughter with pure, poisonous hatred in his eyes.

"You miserable, spineless little idiot," Arthur hissed through clenched teeth.

"You just signed your own execution warrant."

"No, Arthur," Don Salvatore said, his cane slamming against the floorboards with a thunderous thud.

"She signed yours."

Matteo Falcone stood up from his chair, buttoning his tailored jacket.

"The laws of the Chicago Council are unbending, Arthur," Falcone pronounced with icy detachment.

"Fratricide against an allied family."

"Slow poisoning of an innocent mother."

"Systemic theft from the collective maritime shipping lines."

"And the attempted destruction of historical evidence through coercion."

Vincent Marcone stood up as well, his men drawing their weapons along the wall.

"The Bellini name is officially severed from the Council of Families," Marcone declared.

"Every shipping terminal, every warehouse, every vessel bearing the Bellini crest is hereby forfeit to the Moretti bloodline."

"Arthur Bellini is condemned to terminal judgment."

"His assets are liquidated to repay the debt owed to Elena Moretti’s legacy."

Arthur’s veneer of high-society poise shattered completely into wild animal panic.

He did not look at the Council; he looked at Luca.

With a speed shocking for a man of his age, Arthur twisted the silver wolf's head of his walking cane.

A six-inch steel blade sprang from the tip of the cane with a vicious click.

Arthur lunged across the granite table, aiming the blade directly at Luca’s throat.

"If I burn, boy, you burn with me!" Arthur screamed.

Emma did not think.

She dropped the white silk runner just enough to free her right hand and shoved Isabella behind her back.

"Luca!" Emma screamed.

Luca did not even blink.

He sidestepped the thrust with the fluid instinct of a seasoned combatant.

His left hand clamped around Arthur’s wrist like an iron vice, arresting the blade mere inches from his chest.

With a sickening snap of bone, Luca twisted Arthur’s wrist backward.

The cane clattered uselessly onto the black granite table.

Luca brought his right fist across Arthur’s jaw with brutal, concussive force.

Arthur crashed down onto the stone floor, spitting blood and broken teeth across the marble tiles.

Before Arthur could move, Marco and two sentries pinned the older man to the floor with their knees in his back.

Luca stood over him, breathing evenly, his gray eyes looking down at the defeated monster.

"You don't get the honor of dying like a soldier on my mother's floor, Arthur," Luca whispered.

"You will spend the rest of your natural life in a windowless federal penitentiary in Colorado."

"Because every piece of paper in those archival crates is being delivered to the United States Department of Justice in one hour."

"You will rot in a cage, stripped of every dollar, watching your empire vanish."

Luca looked toward Vanessa, who was curled in a corner, weeping uncontrollably.

"Take Vanessa to O'Hare Airport under armed guard," Luca ordered his men.

"Put her on a commercial flight to an estate in South America with no return ticket."

"She will receive a monthly stipend enough to keep her from starving, and nothing more."

"If she ever steps foot in North America again, shoot her on sight."

Vanessa did not argue; she allowed the guards to pull her away, weeping tears of shame and ruin.

Arthur was dragged out through the side entrance, kicking and swearing vengeance until the iron doors cut off his voice forever.

The three Elder Dons bowed their heads to Luca in silent, absolute acknowledgment of his undisputed dominance.

"The debt is cleared, Luca," Don Salvatore said softly.

"Your mother’s spirit may finally rest."

The Elders filed out of the ballroom, leaving Luca, Isabella, and Emma alone in the quiet expanse of the room.

Luca slowly turned toward Emma.

He looked down at the restored wedding gown in her arms, and then up into her warm, steady hazel eyes.

"You stepped in front of a blade for my sister," Luca said, his voice husky with raw reverence.

May you like

"I stepped in front of it for both of you, Mr. Moretti," Emma replied softly, her hands gently smoothing the ivory satin.

"Elena Moretti’s family has bled enough for one lifetime."
