Chapter 3 - The Midnight Incinerator

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.

The grand foyer seemed to lose all sound except for the rhythmic patter of rain against the skylights.

Luca did not shout.

He did not throw a fist.

Instead, he turned to Emma and carefully transferred the damp wedding dress into her arms with reverent care.

"Emma," he said, his voice steady but laced with lethal intent.

"Take this up to my private study on the second floor."

"Do not let anyone touch it."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti," Emma answered, clutching the silk firmly.

Luca turned back toward Marco and the four armed security guards standing near the perimeter.

"Seal every gate on this estate."

"If that disposal truck attempts to clear the perimeter, shoot the tires out."

"Bring the driver and every single box into the private library right now."

"Right away, boss," Marco replied, drawing his radio as he bolted toward the rear exits.

Vanessa rushed forward, abandoning all pretenses of high-society poise.

She lunged for Luca’s arm, her crimson nails digging into the heavy fabric of his tuxedo sleeve.

"Luca, stop! You cannot allow them to search those boxes!"

Luca looked down at her fingers on his sleeve as if an insect had landed there.

"Why, Vanessa?"

"What is resting inside my mother's belongings that terrified you enough to pay for an illegal incineration?"

"It's private family business between the Morettis and the Bellinis!" she cried, her voice cracking in panic.

"Your mother was losing her mind before she died!"

"She wrote terrible, slanderous things about my father in those notebooks!"

"I was trying to protect our wedding!"

"I was trying to protect our families from tearing Chicago apart!"

Luca gripped her wrist, peeling her fingers off his jacket with effortless strength.

"My mother possessed a clearer mind on her deathbed than anyone in your bloodline."

He released her wrist with a flick of his hand, leaving red marks on her pale skin.

He turned to face the forty elite guests who stood paralyzed in their evening wear.

"The portrait session is concluded."

"My security team will escort all of you through the front gate."

"Anyone who mentions a single word of what occurred here tonight will answer to me personally."

No one argued.

Billionaires and socialites hurried toward the cloakroom in dead silence, desperate to flee the storm they knew was coming.

Emma did not linger to watch them leave.

She carried the heavy gown up the wide staircase, keeping her footsteps light and swift.

Her mind was racing as fast as her pulse.

Why would Vanessa risk her upcoming marriage to destroy old notebooks?

If Arthur Bellini was involved, this went far beyond petty jealousy over a wedding veil.

Emma reached Luca’s private study at the end of the second-floor gallery.

The room was lined with dark mahogany bookshelves, smelling of old leather, pipe tobacco, and polished oak.

A large oil painting of Elena Moretti hung above the marble fireplace.

In the portrait, Elena wore a simple sapphire dress, her eyes carrying the exact same quiet kindness that Emma’s mother possessed.

Emma carefully laid the wedding dress across the deep leather sofa.

She smoothed the damp silk, gently brushing away the specks of dirt from the hem.

The door behind her clicked open.

Luca walked in, followed by Marco and two security guards carrying heavy cardboard boxes.

Behind them, two more guards dragged a burly man wearing a grease-stained canvas jacket.

The truck driver’s face was slick with sweat, his eyes darting frantically around the lavish room.

"Put the boxes on the central table," Luca instructed quietly.

The guards set the six heavy crates onto the long mahogany conference table.

Resting atop the second crate was an intricately carved mahogany lockbox with an antique brass keyhole.

Vanessa stepped into the study last, flanked closely by two armed guards who prevented her from leaving.

Her glamorous composure was entirely gone.

Her mascara had smudged beneath her lower lashes, and her scarlet gown looked gaudy under the study’s warm lamps.

Luca walked over to the driver, stopping mere inches from the trembling man.

"What is your name?" Luca asked.

"C-Carl, sir. Carl Miller," the man stammered, raising his hands defensively.

"Carl, who gave you the keys to my service gate?"

Carl pointed a shaking finger directly at Vanessa.

"She did! She met me at an off-grid diner on 4th Street two nights ago!"

"She handed me ten thousand dollars in cash as a deposit!"

"She said these were old storage files from an estate clearance that needed to be shredded and burned!"

"She offered me another forty thousand if every single scrap was ashes inside my industrial kiln before midnight!"

Luca’s jaw hardened until the muscle jumped beneath his cheek.

"Did you open any of these crates, Carl?"

"No, I swear to God I didn't!" Carl cried out.

"She put security zip-ties on every latch!"

"She told me if I opened one box, I'd end up in the Chicago River!"

Luca nodded slowly to Marco.

"Take Carl downstairs, verify his truck is clear, and keep him in the security holding room until morning."

"He doesn't leave, and he doesn't touch a phone."

"Understood, boss," Marco said, shoving the terrified driver out of the room.

The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving only Luca, Vanessa, Emma, and two guards inside.

Luca turned his back on Vanessa and walked toward the mahogany lockbox.

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a thin silver chain he wore around his neck.

Suspended from the chain was a small, ornate brass key.

"She gave me this key the night before she was admitted to the intensive care unit," Luca said softly.

"She told me that when the time was right, I would know which lock it belonged to."

Vanessa took a frantic step toward the table.

"Luca, don't open that! Please, for the love of God, think about what this will do to us!"

Luca ignored her entirely.

May you like

He slid the small brass key into the lockbox.

The mechanism turned with a satisfying, metallic click.
