Chapter 15 - The Forget-Me-Not Vow

Six months later, the spring morning broke across Chicago with pure, crystalline blue skies.

The historic St. Vincent de Paul Cathedral in Lincoln Park was lined with towering arrangements of white calla lilies, baby's breath, and blue hydrangeas.

Two hundred guests from the city’s legitimate commerce, civic foundations, and elder families filled the carved wooden pews.

The atmosphere was not one of fear or syndicate tension; it was one of genuine celebration and renewal.

In the front pew sat Margaret Sullivan, wearing an elegant periwinkle silk suit tailored perfectly to her frame.

Beside her sat Liam, looking sharp and proud in a black tuxedo, holding his mother’s hand.

At the altar stood Julian Rossi, waiting with an anxious, joyful smile for his bride.

Beside Julian stood Luca Moretti, serving as his brother-in-law's best man.

Luca looked magnificent in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture tall and commanding, yet his eyes shone with a peace that had eluded him for ten years.

Then the cathedral pipe organ swelled into the opening chords of the bridal march.

The heavy carved oak doors of the sanctuary opened wide.

A soft, collective gasp swept through the two hundred guests.

Walking down the aisle on the arm of her eldest uncle was Isabella Moretti.

She was utterly breathtaking.

Draped across her slender frame was Elena Moretti’s ivory silk wedding gown.

The fabric flowed like liquid moonlight across the red carpet runner.

The point d'esprit lace sleeves fit her arms like a second skin.

Along the hem, gliding effortlessly above the stone floor, were the hundreds of tiny blue forget-me-nots, restored to absolute, immaculate perfection.

Every stitch, every thread, every petal whispered of a mother’s enduring love, carried across time and through fire to grace her daughter's wedding day.

Isabella’s veil flowed behind her, an authentic custom creation of pure silk illusion crafted by Emma Sullivan's own hands in the estate studio.

Luca watched his sister walk toward him, and tears openly filled his storm-gray eyes.

He looked toward the front row, catching the eye of Emma Sullivan.

Emma stood as the maid of honor, wearing a graceful dusty-rose gown that accentuated her warm eyes and radiant smile.

Their gazes locked across the sacred expanse of the altar.

A silent, profound conversation passed between them—a memory of a rainy afternoon, a muddy hem, a shattered champagne glass, and the quiet courage that had saved an empire from destroying its own soul.

When Isabella reached the altar, she turned to Emma and whispered, "Thank you for giving me my mother today."

"She was always with you, Isabella," Emma whispered back with a tender smile.

The ceremony was sublime and sacred, sealed with vows of loyalty, honor, and unbroken love.

When the bells of the cathedral rang out across the Chicago skyline, declaring the marriage complete, the crowd erupted into warm, genuine applause.

By evening, the celebration had transitioned to the grand ballroom of the Moretti manor.

The room had been transformed into a wonderland of fairy lights, cascading floral garlands, and soft acoustic jazz.

The heavy atmosphere of the old tribunal had been completely erased, replaced by laughter, dancing, and flowing wine.

Isabella and Julian danced their first dance in the center of the floor, the ivory gown spinning in shimmering arcs beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Emma stood quietly near the open French doors of the terrace, sipping sparkling water and looking out at the illuminated fountains.

The cool spring breeze played with the loose curls of her auburn hair.

"You're hiding from the celebration, Miss Sullivan," a deep, familiar voice spoke behind her.

Emma turned to find Luca walking toward her, carrying two flutes of sparkling cider.

"Not hiding, Luca," Emma smiled, accepting the glass from his hand.

"Just taking it all in."

"Seeing Isabella in that dress... it felt like the entire universe righted a terrible wrong today."

Luca leaned against the stone balustrade, his gaze fixed entirely on Emma.

"The universe didn't right that wrong, Emma," Luca said softly.

"You did."

"You stood in my foyer when everyone else looked away."

"You defied an arrogant woman who thought she could erase my mother with money."

"You bled on my study floor to protect a piece of cloth that meant nothing to the world, but everything to my family."

Emma looked down at her glass, a slight blush rising on her cheeks.

"It wasn't just cloth, Luca."

"It was love."

"And love is the only thing worth fighting for."

Luca set his glass down on the stone railing and stepped directly into her space.

He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently taking hers.

"Dance with me, Emma."

Emma looked into his gray eyes, seeing the raw vulnerability and deep affection shining within them.

"Are you sure, Mr. Moretti?" she teased softly.

"Forty photographers are inside."

"The entire city will see the head of the Moretti empire dancing with his former housekeeper."

Luca drew her close, placing his hand securely around her waist.

"Let them see," Luca whispered against her cheek.

"Let them see that the greatest fortune I ever found in this city was the woman who carried my mother’s soul back into my house."

Luca led Emma onto the dance floor beneath the glittering chandeliers.

The crowd parted naturally for them, murmurs of admiration replacing old gossip.

As the orchestra transitioned into a slow, romantic waltz, Luca held Emma close against his chest.

His hand slid gently up to cradle the back of her neck, his thumb tracing her jawline.

"Emma," Luca spoke into the quiet rhythm of the music.

"My mother always told me that when a man finds the woman who guards his honor better than his own sword, he must never let her go."

Emma’s breath hitched as Luca stopped mid-step in the center of the grand ballroom.

Luca reached into his tuxedo jacket and produced a small velvet jewelry box.

He opened it to reveal an antique platinum ring set with a flawless sapphire, surrounded by a halo of tiny diamond forget-me-not petals.

"This was my mother’s private engagement ring," Luca said, his voice trembling with honest emotion.

"She left it in her lockbox with a note saying it was reserved for the woman who would bring peace to my heart."

"I don't care about alliances, Emma."

"I don't care about bloodlines or syndicate politics."

"I love you."

"I want you to stand beside me, not as an employee, not as a guest, but as my equal, my partner, and the lady of this house."

"Will you marry me, Emma Sullivan?"

Emma felt tears of overwhelming happiness spill down her cheeks.

She looked across the room, seeing her mother Margaret smiling through tears of joy, and Isabella clapping her hands with pure delight.

She looked back into Luca’s eyes—the man who had dropped to his knees for his mother, and who now stood offering his entire life to her.

"Yes, Luca," Emma whispered, throwing her arms around his neck.

"A thousand times, yes."

Luca slipped the sapphire ring onto her finger, lifting her off her feet as he kissed her beneath the warm, golden light of the chandeliers.

The ballroom erupted into deafening applause and joyful cheers.

Outside, high above the fireplace in the private study, the portrait of Elena Moretti looked down upon the restored house.

The dress was whole.
