Chapter 8 - Shadows on the Sullivan Doorstep

The blood drained from Emma’s face in a single, devastating instant.
The veil slipped from her trembling hands, caught by Isabella before it could touch the dusty stone floor.
"My mother," Emma gasped, her voice choking with absolute panic.
"My brother Liam is with her—he came home from campus tonight to bring her medication!"
She turned toward the stairs, ready to sprint blindly into the night without a coat, without a weapon, without a plan.
Luca caught her by the shoulders with firm, unyielding strength.
"Emma, stop! Look at me!" Luca commanded, forcing her eyes to meet his.
"I am going to get them!" she cried, tears spilling furiously down her cheeks.
"Arthur will kill them because of what I did tonight!"
"Arthur's men are not going to touch a single hair on your mother's head," Luca said with absolute, unshakable conviction.
"Do you think I would let you stand in my house and defend my mother without protecting yours?"
Luca tapped his tactical radio, speaking in a sharp, clipped code.
"Unit Four, execute extraction protocol on South Michigan Avenue immediately."
A calm, professional voice replied through the static.
"Unit Four already in position, boss."
"Two unmarked Bellini sedans arrived at the Sullivan residence five minutes ago."
"Four hostile operatives attempted to force the fire escape."
"We neutralized all four before they reached the third-floor window."
"The mother and brother are completely unharmed, secured in our armored transport, and en route to the estate right now."
Emma’s knees buckled in sheer, overwhelming relief.
Luca caught her effortlessly, supporting her weight until she found her footing against the stone archway.
"I dispatched a full security detail to your mother's building the moment you walked into that foyer with the dress," Luca said softly.
"In my world, loyalty is answered with blood and iron."
"You saved my family's soul tonight, Emma."
"Your family is under my personal shield for the rest of their lives."
Twenty minutes later, the heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate parted to admit a reinforced black suburban.
Emma stood on the sheltered veranda, shivering in the autumn chill despite the wool blanket Isabella had draped around her shoulders.
The SUV doors opened, and Liam Sullivan leaped out, his young face pale and frantic.
"Emma!" Liam shouted, sprinting up the stone steps and throwing his arms around his sister.
"Men with silenced weapons tried to kick in Mama's bedroom door!"
"Then suddenly another team came out of nowhere and took them down in seconds!"
"What is happening? What kind of place is this?"
"It's okay, Liam," Emma wept, clinging to her brother. "We are safe here. Mr. Moretti protected us."
From the rear passenger seat, two guards gently helped Margaret Sullivan into an automated wheelchair.
Margaret was fifty-eight, but thirty years of agonizing seamstress labor and severe arthritis had aged her delicate frame.
Her silver hair was pulled back in a neat bun, and her wise, hazel eyes took in the armed guards, the towering estate, and the mafia boss without flinching.
Luca stepped forward, his imposing height and lethal aura softening completely as he approached the elderly woman.
He knelt down on one knee on the damp veranda so his eyes were level with Margaret’s.
"Mrs. Sullivan," Luca said, his voice deep with genuine humility.
"I am Luca Moretti."
"I apologize from the bottom of my soul that the sins of my world reached your doorstep tonight."
Margaret looked at the notorious mobster, then reached out a gnarled, swollen hand and placed it gently against his cheek.
Her touch was warm and filled with the profound empathy of a mother who understood suffering.
"Your mother was Elena Conti before she married, wasn't she?" Margaret asked in a raspy, gentle voice.
Luca’s eyes widened in genuine shock.
"You knew her?"
"I worked alongside her at the bridal atelier on Michigan Avenue in nineteen-ninety-two," Margaret said softly, a faint smile gracing her lined face.
"Elena had the most gifted hands for embroidery in this entire city."
"She spoke constantly of her young son, Luca, and how he would grow up to be a protector."
Luca bowed his head, a single tear slipping past his guard and dropping onto the stone porch.
"She was right about you, son," Margaret whispered, patting his cheek. "You protected my daughter tonight."
Luca took Margaret’s frail hand and pressed it to his forehead in silent reverence.
"Come inside out of the cold, Mrs. Sullivan," Luca said, rising to his feet and personally taking the handles of her wheelchair.
"This house is your home now."

"Our private medical team will arrive in one hour to begin your treatments."
"And upstairs, waiting in my study, is a piece of Elena’s work that needs your blessing."
