Chapter 2 - The Tears of a Ruthless Man

The grand foyer was alive with the clinking of crystal flutes and low laughter.

Forty of Chicago’s most powerful figures stood clustered around the dual marble staircases.

High-fashion society photographers adjusted three-point umbrella lights near the entrance.

Vanessa Bellini stood beside Luca Moretti near the towering bronze fountain.

She had changed into a breathtaking scarlet evening gown that hugged her slender figure.

Her diamond engagement ring sparkled under the massive Austrian crystal chandelier.

Luca stood tall in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, holding a glass of vintage champagne.

His jaw was set in its usual impassive line, radiating an aura of dangerous authority.

Then the heavy click of wet housekeeping shoes broke the rhythm of classical violin music.

Emma stepped past the gilded archway, her drenched uniform clinging to her shoulders.

In her arms rested the yellowed, water-stained wedding gown.

Mud from the terrace had splattered the lower satin folds.

Torn lace dangled loosely over Emma's forearms.

A collective murmur swept through the room as guests turned their heads.

Vanessa’s triumphant smile instantly vanished.

"Get that filthy dress out of here!" Vanessa screeched, her voice reverberating across the foyer.

Two photographers lowered their cameras in shock.

Vanessa rushed toward Emma, her manicured hands trembling with indignation.

"You stupid, worthless little maid! I explicitly ordered you to incinerate that garbage!"

Emma did not back down, though her knees felt like water.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but I could not bring myself to discard it."

"Do you have any idea how much this private portrait session costs?" Vanessa hissed.

"Get that disgusting, mildewed rag out of this house before I have you arrested for trespassing!"

Luca Moretti slowly turned around.

The crystal flute slipped from his fingers.

It shattered against the imported Carrara marble, sending champagne splashing across the hem of Vanessa’s red dress.

He did not look at the broken glass.

He did not look at his screaming fiancée.

His eyes locked entirely onto the bundle of wet fabric in Emma’s arms.

The color completely drained from his face, leaving his tanned skin as pale as ash.

"Emma?"

His voice did not sound like the ruthless syndicate boss who held judges and politicians in his pocket.

It was the voice of a broken, terrified boy.

"Where did you get that dress?"

Emma held the gown steady, her breath hitching in her throat.

"From the third-floor cedar chest, Mr. Moretti."

Luca stepped forward, his polished leather shoes crunching over the shards of crystal.

Grown men who commanded private armies stepped out of his path without being told.

Vanessa reached for his arm, her expression switching rapidly to practiced concern.

"Luca, darling, don't look at it. It's an old ruin that the mice got into."

Luca did not even blink; he shrugged her hand off his arm with terrifying detachment.

He reached Emma and came to a sudden halt.

His large, scarred hands hovered over the wet silk.

"Emma," he whispered, his throat working violently.

"May I?"

"Of course, sir," Emma answered softly.

Luca reached out and touched the tattered lace sleeve.

Then, in front of forty of the most ruthless and wealthy elites in the state, Luca Moretti sank to his knees.

A suffocating hush descended over the grand foyer.

The string quartet stopped playing mid-measure.

Luca buried his face directly into the folds of the aged satin, inhaling the faint scent of dried lavender that still lingered in the seams.

Tears welled in his dark eyes and spilled openly down his hollow cheeks.

"My mother made this with her own hands," Luca choked out, his voice cracking beneath the weight of years of repressed grief.

"She sat by the fire in our old apartment every night for eleven months, sewing every flower."

Vanessa took a tentative step forward, her tone laced with nervous impatience.

"Luca, sweetheart, please stand up. The entire board is watching you."

Luca ignored her completely.

He gently lifted the bottom edge of the skirt to inspect the embroidery.

His fingers abruptly froze against the jagged hem.

The weeping stopped instantly.

The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second.

"Who cut this?" Luca asked.

The quietness of his tone was far more terrifying than a shout.

Vanessa forced a brittle, dismissive laugh.

"Oh, heavens, darling, it was completely dry-rotted. I had my dressmaker trim away the decayed fringe."

Emma took a deep, steadying breath.

She knew speaking could cost her job, her home, and her safety.

Yet she thought of her mother’s honor and the deceitful cruelty standing in red silk.

"Sir, that lace was never dry-rotted," Emma spoke clearly.

Vanessa spun toward Emma with murder in her eyes.

"You insolent little tramp, shut your mouth!"

Luca rose to his feet with fluid, predatory grace.

He did not raise his voice, but the authority behind it was absolute.

"Let her finish, Vanessa."

Emma pointed to the exposed threads and the cleanly bisected blossoms.

"Mr. Moretti, Miss Bellini displayed her custom wedding veil to the bridal party this morning."

Vanessa’s pale face flushed crimson with fury.

"What does my veil have to do with this rubbish?" Vanessa shouted.

"The forget-me-not embroidery on your veil is identical to this gown down to the thread count," Emma stated evenly.

"You cut the border from his mother's dress to decorate your own veil, and then ordered me to throw the rest in the dumpster so he would never know."

The foyer became as silent as a tomb.

Luca turned his gaze from Emma toward his fiancée.

"Where is your veil, Vanessa?"

"It's... it's being steamed at the salon downtown," Vanessa stammered, backing up against the bronze fountain.

"Marco," Luca said without looking away from her.

His chief of security stepped out from the shadows near the stairs.

"Have two men retrieve that veil from her dressing suite upstairs right now," Luca commanded.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her chest heaving against her red corset.

"Luca, stop this madness! Fine! I took a scrap of lace!"

Several socialites in the front row exchanged horrified glances.

"I wanted something old and sentimental for our walk down the aisle!" Vanessa cried out.

"I thought incorporating your family heritage would be a romantic gesture!"

Luca looked down at the ruined hem, his jaw muscles clenching until they clicked.

"My mother made this gown for my sister, Isabella."

Vanessa froze.

"What?"

"Before my mother passed away ten years ago, she placed this gown into my hands," Luca said, his voice trembling with cold rage.

"She made me swear on her deathbed that this dress would remain intact for Isabella's wedding day."

"Luca, I swear I had no idea," Vanessa pleaded, her voice turning thin.

"You knew," Luca said, his eyes burning into hers.

"Isabella brought you into the cedar room the day after we announced our engagement and showed it to you."

Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

Luca lifted the heavy skirt slightly, his gaze shifting back to Emma.

His brow furrowed as an older memory resurfaced.

"Emma."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"When you lifted the gown from the cedar chest... did you find the small wooden box?"

Emma shook her head honestly.

"There was only the gown on top, sir. But I did notice the base of the chest seemed unusually thick."

Luca’s eyes snapped instantly toward the grand staircase, and then locked onto Vanessa.

"Where is the mahogany box that belonged to my mother?"

Vanessa's knuckles turned white around her designer purse.

"I have no earthly idea what you're talking about."

"It was kept in the hidden compartment beneath that gown," Luca stepped toward her, his voice lowering dangerously.

"My mother locked her personal journals and private documents inside it before she entered the hospital."

"I didn't touch any box, Luca!" Vanessa shrieked.

At that exact moment, the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, appeared at the top of the grand marble staircase.

Her face was chalky, and her apron strings were twisted in her trembling hands.

"Mr. Moretti?" Mrs. Gable called out hesitantly.

Luca stopped mid-stride and looked up.

"What is it, Mrs. Gable?"

"Sir, there is a commercial disposal truck idling at the rear service dock," the older woman reported.

"The driver refuses to leave because Miss Bellini already paid him in advance."

A cold premonition seized Emma’s chest.

She remembered the large cardboard crates stacked along the back wall of the storage room.

"What was he hired to collect?" Luca demanded.

Mrs. Gable glanced nervously at Vanessa before looking back at her employer.

"Six sealed archival crates from the attic, sir. All of them labeled with your mother’s maiden name."

Luca slowly turned back toward Vanessa, his expression completely blank, devoid of any warmth or humanity.

"Vanessa. What else did you order taken from this house?"

Vanessa began to shake her head, retreating until her back struck the marble rim of the fountain.

"Luca, listen to me, you don't understand the whole picture..."

May you like

Mrs. Gable’s next sentence silenced whatever defense Vanessa was preparing.

"Sir, the driver claims he was given an extra cash bonus to transport those boxes to an industrial incinerator and burn them before midnight."
