Chapter 9 - The Confession Behind Gilded Bars

The west wing guest suite was a gilded cage.
Heavy mahogany shutters were bolted over the windows, blocking out the howling wind and rain.
Vanessa Bellini sat curled on a silk chaise lounge, her extravagant red gown wrinkled and smeared with tear stains.
Her mascara was completely ruined, and her bare feet were tucked beneath the hem of her skirt.
Outside the locked door, the heavy boots of four armed sentries paced with mechanical regularity.
The heavy brass deadbolt turned with a loud, hollow clunk.
Vanessa jumped to her feet, her hands clutching the back of the settee like a cornered animal.
Luca stepped into the room, followed by Isabella and Marco.
Luca held the yellowed physician’s ledger in his left hand and the tape recorder in his right.
He did not look angry anymore; his expression had settled into a cold, terrifying detachment that was far more dangerous than rage.
"Luca, please," Vanessa begged, her voice hoarse from hours of screaming.
"Let me call my father."
"You don't understand what he will do if I don't check in before morning."
"He will unleash every contract killer on the eastern seaboard!"
Luca walked over to a marble coffee table and set the ledger down with a heavy slap.
"Your father already tried to breach my perimeter tonight, Vanessa."
"He also sent four men to murder the family of the maid who saved my mother's dress."
"All four of them are currently in my holding cells singing like canaries."
Vanessa’s eyes dropped to the ledger, and the last shred of color vanished from her skin.
"Where did you find that?" she whispered, backing away until her spine hit the wall.
"In the apothecary cellar," Isabella spoke up, her voice trembling with righteous fury.
"The place you and your father thought you could bury forever."
"You knew, didn't you, Vanessa?" Isabella demanded, stepping toward her former friend.
"You didn't just find out about this when we got engaged."
"You played with me, you went dress shopping with me, knowing your father fed my mother poison!"
Vanessa sank to the floor, wrapping her arms around her knees and rocking back and forth.
"I didn't know about the poison until three months ago!" Vanessa shrieked, breaking into violent sobs.
"I swear to God on my mother's grave, I didn't know she was murdered until I overheard my father on the phone!"
Luca stepped closer, his heavy shoes stopping inches from her trembling hands.
"Why did he do it, Vanessa?"
"Speak before I hand you over to the Council of Families as an accessory to treason."
Vanessa looked up, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated terror.
"My father was stealing from the Great Lakes shipping revenues!" she confessed, words tumbling out in a frantic rush.
"Elena found a discrepancy of forty million dollars in the maritime shipping manifests!"
"She was going to take the files to your father and call a tribunal of the Five Families!"
"If your father found out, Arthur would have been executed according to the ancient laws!"
"So he used Dr. Mercer to weaken her heart over six months!"
"He thought that once Elena was dead, your father would fall into depression and leave the logistics contracts to him!"
Luca listened in dead silence, his fists clenching until the tendons stood out like cables on his forearms.
Every lie of the last ten years was unraveling before his eyes.
His father’s broken heart, his mother’s agonizing decline, his own misplaced trust in the Bellini family—all built on cold-blooded greed.
"And what was your role in this, Vanessa?" Luca asked, his voice deathly low.
"Why destroy the dress?"
"Because the original shipping manifests from nineteen-fifteen are sealed in the base of that cedar chest!" Vanessa cried out.
"My father told me that Elena had stashed the duplicate audit records beneath the fabric of her wedding gown!"
"He told me that if you ever held that dress again, you would find the false compartment and find his handwriting on the forged manifests!"
"He commanded me to burn everything before our wedding!"
"He said if the Morettis and Bellinis merged through marriage, the past would be buried forever!"
"I only cut the lace to make it look like an accident—like I was just being spoiled and reckless!"
"I thought if I ruined the dress first, you would let me throw it out without checking the wood!"
Isabella turned away in pure disgust, covering her mouth with her hand.
Luca stared down at the woman he had almost married, feeling nothing but profound pity and disgust.
"You traded a mother's sacred memory and a woman's life for your father's stolen empire," Luca said.
"Where is your father's digital ledger key, Vanessa?"
"The one that controls his offshore bank accounts and logistics routes?"
Vanessa reached into the bodice of her gown with shaking fingers.
She pulled out a small platinum thumb drive suspended on a delicate gold chain.
"It's here," she wept, extending it toward him.
"Take it! Take everything!"
"Just don't let my father kill me when this is over!"
Luca took the drive from her fingers without his skin touching hers.
"You won't be killed, Vanessa," Luca said coldly, turning toward the door.
"Death is far too merciful for a traitor."

"You will stand in front of the Council at dawn and repeat every single word you just told me."
"And then you will spend the rest of your life in an exile so absolute that no one in this city will ever speak your name again."
