Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Empire

The mahogany-paneled walls of Ethan's private study usually brought him a sense of calm, but tonight, they felt like a cage. He sat behind his massive desk, the folded envelope from Sofia resting between them like a live grenade. Claire stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the dark, manicured gardens, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. The silence stretched until the sharp chime of Ethan's laptop signaled the arrival of Richard's email.
Ethan clicked the file open. His eyes scanned the digital ledgers, his brow furrowing deeper with every line of data. It was far worse than a single stolen paycheck or a hidden expense account. The household ledger was a disaster of cooked books. For the past year, multiple domestic workers—gardeners, drivers, cooks—had been logged as receiving full bonuses and hazard pay, yet Ethan knew for a fact that many of them had complained of delayed stipends or had abruptly quit without explanation.
"You didn't just target Maria," Ethan whispered, the gravity of the betrayal settling heavily on his shoulders. He looked up at his wife, seeing her clearly for the first time in years. "You've been systematically skimming from the domestic payroll for over fourteen months. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, Claire. Where is it? You have an allowance that could fund a small country. Why do this?"
Claire turned around, her eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious fire. The fear had transformed into bitter resentment. "My allowance? You mean the strictly monitored budget your corporate lawyers approve every January? The one that ensures I look like a billionaire’s wife but have to beg for a line of credit if I want to invest in my own art gallery?" She walked over to the desk, slamming her palms down on the polished wood. "I am a Whitmore, Ethan! I refuse to sit at charity luncheons listening to the wives of tech moguls talk about their independent portfolios while I am treated like an expensive ornament you keep on display!"
"So your solution was to extort the vulnerable?" Ethan shot back, rising from his chair to tower over her. "You threatened to tear Sofia away from her mother because you wanted to play venture capitalist? Do you have any idea what this could do to the company if the press gets hold of it? Whitmore Enterprises is built on corporate integrity. If our domestic staff is being blackmailed and starved under my own roof, the board will strip me of the CEO position by morning!"
"Then don't let them find out," Claire hissed, leaning in close. "Pay the girl off. Give Maria a hundred thousand dollars, tell her it was an administrative glitch, and make her sign a non-disclosure agreement. She’s poor, Ethan. She’ll take the money and run. This whole thing disappears if you just write a check."
Ethan stared at her, feeling a cold chasm open up between them. They had been married for eight years—a union born of high-society match-making and shared ambition. He had loved her once, or at least, he had loved the brilliant, elegant woman he thought she was. But looking at her now, seeing the complete absence of remorse, he felt a profound sense of revulsion.
"No," Ethan said softly. "I'm not covering this up for you."
Before Claire could reply, Ethan's personal phone rang. It was an unknown number. He answered it, expecting a reporter or a panicked board member. Instead, a gruff, unfamiliar male voice came through the speaker.
"Mr. Whitmore? I understand you're currently looking through your wife's financial discrepancies. I suggest you look a little deeper into the Whitmore Foundation's offshore accounts. Your wife hasn't just been stealing from the maids, sir. She's been selling your corporate logistics data to your primary competitor, Vanguard Tech. If you try to divorce her or throw her to the wolves, she goes down—but she takes your entire family legacy with her."
The line went dead. Ethan slowly lowered the phone, his face turning a ghostly shade of white. He looked at Claire, whose angry expression suddenly dissolved into a smug, triumphant smile.

"Who was that?" Ethan whispered, though deep down, he already knew the answer.
"I told you, Ethan," Claire said smoothly, straightening her silk robe and walking back toward the door. "You don't know what it takes to survive in our world. You think you're the only one with power? I suggest you think very carefully about your next move. Because if I fall from this mansion, I will make sure the entire Whitmore empire burns to the ground with me."
