Chapter 6 - A Calculated Move

Returning to the mansion felt like walking into enemy territory. Ethan knew that every corner could be bugged, every servant potentially subverted by Claire's stolen wealth. He walked directly into his study, locking the door behind him. He needed to bait a trap, and he needed to do it before Julian Vance realized Maria was out of his reach.

He sat at his desk and opened his biometric-secured laptop. Instead of accessing the real aerospace encryption keys, he began constructing a highly sophisticated, realistic dummy file. It contained corrupted data strings that looked perfectly valid on the surface but would act as a Trojan horse, entirely destroying whatever server tried to unpack it. He named the file Project_Apex_Final_Keys.dat.

As he worked, his office door clicked open. Claire walked in, no longer wearing her silk robe, but dressed in a sharp, intimidating power suit. She leaned against the doorframe, watching him with a calculated coldness.

"You're working late, darling," she said sneeringly. "I thought you'd be busy playing savior to the peasants downtown."

"I took care of Maria," Ethan said without looking up from his screen, keeping his voice deliberately strained, mimicking a man who was defeated. "She won't talk. I paid her enough to buy her silence forever. I realize now that you were right, Claire. A public scandal right now would destroy the aerospace launch. I can't let Whitmore Enterprises fall. For the sake of the legacy, I am willing to overlook your... indiscretions. We will handle our marital issues privately after the launch."

Claire’s eyes narrowed. She walked closer to the desk, trying to read his expression. "Really? Just like that? The great, moral Ethan Whitmore is compromising his principles for a corporate contract?"

"I am compromising for survival," Ethan said, looking up, his eyes perfectly mirroring a desperate, broken man. "If Julian Vance has the foundation's offshore logs, he holds all the cards. I'm not a fool, Claire. I know you've been working with him. Tell Julian that if he deletes the foundation data and hands over the blackmail files on my family, I will give him a minority stake in the aerospace project. We can all win here."

Claire looked at him for a long moment, a slow, predatory smile spreading across her lips. She believed him. She truly believed her threats had broken his spirit. "I knew you'd see reason eventually, Ethan. I'll pass your offer along to Julian. But he’s going to want proof of your good faith. He’s going to want to see that you're willing to cooperate."

"Tell him I am ready to talk," Ethan said, closing his laptop with a sharp click. "A face-to-face meeting. Tomorrow night, at the abandoned shipyard warehouse on the pier. Just him, you, and me. No lawyers, no security. We settle this like adults, or the deal is off and I'll take my chances with the FBI."

"Bold," Claire purred, leaning down to plant a cold, breathless kiss on his cheek. "I'll let him know. Don't disappoint me, Ethan. This is your last chance to save your precious empire."

As she walked out of the room, laughing softly, Ethan pulled a wet wipe from his drawer and aggressively wiped her kiss off his face. He picked up his phone and dialed Marcus. "The trap is set. Prepare the tactical team and contact the federal authorities. We're going to the pier tomorrow night, and we're bringing the house down."
