Chapter 4 - The Hidden Enemy

The dawn light offered no warmth as it broke over the city. Ethan hadn't slept a single wink. He had spent the remaining hours of the night buried in the encryption logs of the Whitmore Foundation—a global charity organization he had founded in his late mother's honor. It was supposed to provide clean water and education to developing nations, but as Ethan bypassed layer after layer of security, he found a horrific truth. The foundation was being used as a pipeline to launder corporate espionage payouts.
Claire hadn't just been stealing; she had been acting as an insider threat for Vanguard Tech, a ruthless conglomerate led by Julian Vance—Ethan's bitterest childhood rival and professional nemesis. Julian had been trying to hostilely take over Whitmore Enterprises for three years. Now, Ethan realized Julian had planted a mole in his very bed.
"Sir," Marcus, Ethan's head of private security and his most trusted confidant, said as he stepped quietly into the study holding two cups of black coffee. He placed one on the desk and looked at his exhausted boss. "We tracked the burner phone that called you last night. It pinged a tower near Vanguard's headquarters. The voice print matches a fixer named Victor Cross. He handles Julian Vance's... dirtier assignments."
Ethan rubbed his face with his hands, feeling the heavy stubble on his jaw. "So Julian has me cornered. If I expose Claire for what she did to Maria and the other staff, the ensuing investigation will unlock the foundation's books. The public will see the corporate data leaks, the board will assume I was complicit to avoid taxes, and the stock will plummet. Julian can buy up the controlling shares for pennies on the dollar."
"And if you do nothing?" Marcus asked grimly.
"Then I am a hostage in my own home, married to a criminal who will slowly bleed my family's legacy dry," Ethan said, his voice hardening. He took a sip of the bitter coffee. "I won't do it. I won't let them win. First, we secure Maria and Sofia. Did the guard get them home safely?"
"Yes, sir. But there's a problem," Marcus hesitated, pulling out a tablet. "Our team stationed outside Maria’s apartment reported that two men in an unmarked black SUV arrived an hour ago. They tried to force their way into her building. My men intercepted them, but it’s clear Claire or Julian is trying to silence her before we can secure her testimony. I’ve moved Maria and Sofia to a safehouse downtown for now."

Ethan stood up, his jaw clenched, a dangerous fire igniting in his eyes. "Good. Keep them under twenty-four-hour guard. If a single hair on Sofia's head is harmed, I will personally dismantle Vanguard Tech brick by brick." He grabbed his coat from the chair. "Get the car ready, Marcus. We're going to see Maria. It's time I face the damage my blindness has caused."
As Ethan walked out of the mansion, he passed Claire in the breakfast room. She was calmly sipping tea, looking radiant in a designer dress, completely unbothered by the chaos she had unleashed. She offered him a mocking wave of her teacup. Ethan didn't even look back. He knew that the war had officially begun, and to win it, he would have to become just as ruthless as the monsters threatening his life.
