Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The night of the meeting arrived with a torrential downpour that whipped against the blacked-out windows of Ethan's SUV. Marcus navigated the slick, deserted streets leading toward the industrial pier, his eyes constantly checking the rearview mirror. In the back seat, Ethan sat in total silence, a sleek USB drive gripped firmly in his palm. It contained the Trojan horse file—the cheese for Julian Vance’s trap.

"Federal agents are already in position around the perimeter, sir," Marcus reported, his voice low over the sound of the rain. "They have audio and video surveillance planted inside the warehouse. The moment Julian or Claire explicitly admits to corporate espionage or extortion, the feds will breach the doors. But you'll be inside alone for at least five minutes before they can move in safely. Are you sure about this?"

"Julian is paranoid," Ethan responded, his voice sounding like grinding stones. "If he sees even a shadow of a tactical team, he’ll flee, and those offshore logs will hit the internet before we can block them. I have to be the one to look him in the eye. I have to make him believe he’s won."

The SUV pulled up to the rusted gates of the massive, abandoned shipyard warehouse. The structure loomed like a rotting iron beast against the black ocean. Ethan stepped out into the pouring rain, his long coat soaking instantly as he walked toward the side entrance. Marcus stayed with the vehicle, his hand resting tightly on his holstered sidearm, watching his friend disappear into the gloom.

Ethan pushed open the heavy iron door, entering a cavernous space filled with the smell of rust, salt water, and decay. Shadows danced wildly across the concrete floor, thrown by a single high-intensity work light set up in the center of the room. Standing beneath the light, flanked by two heavily armed guards, was Julian Vance. He looked exactly as Ethan remembered—sleek, arrogant, with a sharp, angular face and cold, calculating eyes. Beside him stood Claire, looking like a dark queen in a leather trench coat.

"Ethan," Julian called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated steel walls, dripping with mock warmth. "Welcome to the end of your era. I must admit, I never thought I’d see the day you’d come crawling to me in a place like this."

Ethan walked into the circle of light, stopping ten feet away from them. He didn't show fear. He didn't show anger. He kept his face completely blank. "I’m not crawling, Julian. I’m negotiating. You wanted the crown jewel of my company. Let's see what you brought to trade."

Claire stepped forward, a patronizing smirk on her face. "Don't act tough, Ethan. You're completely out of options. Show Julian the encryption keys, or we walk out of here, and by sunrise, Whitmore Enterprises will be a crime scene."

Julian nodded, pulling a sleek tablet from his coat pocket. "I have the complete encryption logs of the Whitmore Foundation right here, Ethan. One touch, and they are deleted permanently from my servers, wiping away any trace of Claire’s financial... creativity. But first, give me the keys to the aerospace project. Let’s see the prize."

Ethan slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out the flash drive, holding it up between his fingers. "It’s all right here. The complete biometric bypass and data strings for Project Apex. But I want to hear it from you first, Julian. I want to know exactly how long you've been using my wife to sabotage my life."

Julian laughed, a harsh, grating sound that filled the empty warehouse. "Oh, Ethan. You always were so pathetically naive. You think this started a year ago? Claire has been on my payroll since before you even proposed to her. Why do you think she targeted you? You were the perfect mark—rich, idealistic, and completely blinded by your own morality."

Ethan felt a physical blow straight to his chest. He looked at Claire, his voice barely a whisper against the roaring wind outside. "Before we were married? You planned all of this?"

Claire laughed, her eyes completely devoid of humanity. "Did you really think a woman like me could fall for a boring, workaholic Boy Scout like you, Ethan? Julian offered me a real partnership. You just offered me a golden cage. Now, give him the drive. Your time is officially up."
