Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs

Ethan stared at his wife, the realization of her total, deep-seated betrayal washing over him. The past eight years of his life had been a carefully orchestrated lie. Every anniversary, every shared dream, every quiet moment in their home had been engineered by his worst enemy. But instead of breaking him, the revelation acted like a spark in a powder keg. The pain vanished, replaced by a pure, blinding fury that solidified into absolute resolve.
"You're right, Julian," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm pitch. "I was naive. I believed in honor, I believed in loyalty, and I believed that my wife was a human being capable of love. But being naive doesn't mean I am stupid."
Julian's smirk flickered. He stepped back slightly, his eyes narrowing as he sensed a shift in the air. "What are you talking about, Ethan? Toss the drive over. Now."
"The drive in my hand contains exactly what you deserve," Ethan said, tossing the USB stick carelessly onto the concrete floor between them. It bounced and rolled into the dirt. "It’s a specialized virus. If you plug that into any Vanguard server, it will completely wipe your entire corporate network within thirty seconds. It’s over, Julian. I know about the offshore accounts. I know about the data leaks. And more importantly, the United States federal government knows too."
Claire gasped, her face draining of all color. "Julian, he’s bluffing! He wouldn't risk the company!"
"He isn't bluffing!" Julian snarled, suddenly looking at his tablet. The screen was flashing with a series of frantic alerts from his security team outside. "What the hell is this? My perimeter guards aren't responding!"
Suddenly, the high-intensity work light exploded into a blinding flash as the massive bay doors of the warehouse were violently blown open. Flashbangs detonated with deafening roars, filling the air with thick smoke and chaotic light.
"Federal Agents! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!" a chorus of heavily armed tactical officers shouted as they swarmed into the warehouse from every entry point, their laser sights cutting through the smoke like red spiderwebs.
Julian’s two guards immediately raised their weapons, but they were neutralized instantly by non-lethal sniper fire from the rafters, dropping to the ground in agony. Julian tried to run toward the back exit, but Marcus stepped out from the shadows, his weapon raised, blocking his path completely.
"Going somewhere, Vance?" Marcus asked coldly.
Claire screamed, turning to sprint away, but she tripped on her long trench coat, falling hard onto the concrete. She scrambled backward as two federal agents pinned her arms behind her back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists. She looked up at Ethan, her hair disheveled, her face twisted in a mask of pure terror and hatred.
"Ethan! You can't do this to me! I am your wife!" she shrieked, her voice echoing pathetically over the sound of the rain. "You'll be ruined! The scandal will destroy everything!"

Ethan walked slowly over to her, looking down at the woman who had spent nearly a decade plotting his destruction. There was no pity left in his eyes. "You stopped being my wife the moment you threatened a little girl and her mother to cover up your crimes. Enjoy the cell, Claire. I’ll make sure your divorce papers are delivered to the federal penitentiary."
As Julian and Claire were dragged away in chains, screaming curses into the stormy night, Ethan stood alone in the center of the ruined warehouse. He took a deep, shaky breath of the cold ocean air. The war was won, the threat was eliminated, but the reconstruction of his life was only just beginning.
