Chapter 5 - The Safehouse Promises

The safehouse was a modest, unmarked apartment in the heart of the city’s industrial district, a stark contrast to the opulence of the Whitmore mansion. When Ethan walked through the heavy steel door, he found Maria Torres sitting at a small wooden table, her hands trembling around a mug of tea. Sofia was curled up on a nearby sofa, fast asleep, still wearing her pink backpack like a security blanket.
When Maria saw Ethan enter, she immediately stood up, her face pale with terror. "Mr. Whitmore... please, I am so sorry. Sofia shouldn't have gone to your house. She's just a little girl, she didn't understand—"
"Maria, stop. Please," Ethan interrupted gently, stepping forward and placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. He felt her flinch slightly before she relaxed under his steady gaze. "You have absolutely nothing to apologize for. Sofia is an incredibly brave girl. If it weren't for her, I would still be blind to the horrific things happening under my own roof. I am the one who should be begging for your forgiveness."
Maria looked at him, her eyes filling with tears. "Mrs. Whitmore told me that if I ever spoke a word about the missing wages, she would make sure the police took Sofia away from me. She said you knew all about it, that you didn't care about people like us."
"That was a lie," Ethan said fiercely, his voice filled with a deep, aching sincerity. "I knew nothing, but that is no excuse. I trusted the wrong person, and because of that, you and your daughter suffered. I have already wired your full back-wages, along with a significant compensation bonus, to a secure account Marcus set up for you. Your rent is paid for the next three years. You don't ever have to worry about a place to live again."
Maria gasped, covering her mouth as sob shook her frame. "Mr. Whitmore... I don't know what to say. Thank you. Thank you so much."
"Don't thank me yet," Ethan said, his expression turning serious as he pulled up a chair and sat across from her. "The people who did this to you are very powerful, and they are desperate. My wife has aligned herself with a very dangerous man named Julian Vance. They are going to try to use you to get to me. I need you to stay here, under Marcus's protection, until I can end this. But to do that, I need your help. Did Claire ever make you sign anything, or did you ever see anyone unusual visiting her at the estate when I wasn't there?"
Maria wiped her tears, her brow furrowing as she thought back. "There was a man. He came three times over the last few months, always late at night when you were away on business. He had a scarred face and cold eyes. Mrs. Whitmore called him Julian. One night, she ordered me to bring them coffee in the study. They didn't see me enter because they were arguing. I heard him tell her that the 'shipment details' for the new Whitmore aerospace tech had been successfully transferred, but he needed her to secure the encryption keys from your personal laptop."
Ethan’s blood ran cold. The aerospace tech was a multi-billion dollar government contract his firm had just secured—the crown jewel of Whitmore Enterprises. If Julian got the encryption keys, he could sabotage the launch, framing Ethan's company for a catastrophic failure that would result in criminal charges for treason.
"Did she get them?" Ethan asked, his breath hitching in his throat.

"I don't think so," Maria whispered. "She told him your laptop had biometric security and she couldn't bypass it without you noticing. That's when she saw me standing there. The next day, my pay stopped, and the threats began."
Ethan stood up, a terrifying clarity washing over him. The missing wages weren't just about Claire's greed; it was a desperate attempt to terrorize Maria into silence because she had witnessed the ultimate act of treason. He looked over at the sleeping Sofia, his heart hardening with a definitive, unyielding resolve. "Thank you, Maria. You’ve given me exactly what I need to fight back."
