Chapter 3 - The Predator’s Code and the Price of Protection

The kiss wasn't gentle, nor was it brutal; it was an annexation. Dominic’s lips claimed mine with a deliberate, thorough certainty that left my head spinning and my knees dangerously weak. When he finally pulled back a fraction of an inch, I was breathing heavily, my hands instinctively clutching the lapels of his shirt to keep from sinking to the floor.
“That,” Dominic murmured, his thumb tracing the swollen line of my lower lip, “is just the beginning of what you’ve been missing, Norah.”
He didn't push me further that afternoon. With a final, lingering look that promised retribution for every solitary year I had endured, he turned on his heel and walked out of the suite, leaving me breathless, shaken, and utterly incapable of focusing on the Singapore shipping manifests.
By evening, the reality of my new gilded cage began to sink in. Mrs. Gable returned with a selection of elegant evening wear—silk dresses in emerald, midnight blue, and crimson, tailored by high-end designers whose names I only recognized from fashion magazines.
“Mr. Gallow requests your company for dinner in the main dining hall at eight,” Mrs. Gable stated neutrally, placing a dark emerald gown across the foot of the bed. “He expects you to wear this.”
I stared at the dress, the silk shimmering under the chandelier light like liquid jade. “I am an auditor, Mrs. Gable. Not a companion.”
The older woman offered a faint, knowing smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. “In Dominic Gallow’s world, Miss Norah, everyone has a designated place. Right now, yours is right beside him. Believe me, that is a much safer place to be than standing anywhere in his path.”
That evening, dressed in the emerald gown that hugged my curves in ways I had never experienced before, I descended the sweeping curved staircase into the grand foyer of the mansion. Dominic was waiting at the foot of the stairs, dressed in a sleek tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding stature.
As I reached the final step, his dark eyes swept over me from head to toe, lingering on the exposed expanse of my collarbones and the fitted silhouette of the silk dress. A low, guttural murmur of approval vibrated in his chest.
“Exquisite,” he noted, offering his arm. I hesitated for a fraction of a second before sliding my trembling fingers into the crook of his elbow. His muscles were corded like steel beneath the custom wool.
Dinner in the cavernous dining hall was a silent, opulent affair, served by hushed attendants who moved like ghosts across the Persian carpets. Between courses, Dominic casually discussed matters that made my blood run cold—disruptions in import channels, rival syndicates testing his maritime borders, and the swift, brutal liquidation of a corrupt city councilman who had tried to double-cross his shipping firm.
“You’re terrified,” Dominic observed softly, cutting a piece of rare steak with effortless precision.
“I’m alive,” I corrected quietly, meeting his gaze across the candlelight. “And I prefer remaining that way.”
“As long as you are under my roof, wearing my protection, no one in this city can touch you,” Dominic stated, his voice carrying absolute, terrifying finality. “You spent your youth shielding a fading mind from the world, Norah. Now, let me shield you from the wolves who would tear you apart the moment you stepped back into that miserable cubicle.”
The words struck a raw, exposed nerve. He had looked into my past, my files, my solitary existence. He knew every scar, every sacrifice, every lonely night I had spent staring at the ceiling while my mother muttered incoherently in the next room. He hadn't just kidnapped an auditor; he had studied my vulnerabilities and wrapped his possessive protection around every single one of them.
Later that night, long after dinner concluded, Dominic escorted me back to the threshold of my suite. He didn't enter the room; instead, he caught my hand, pressing a lingering, burning kiss to the inside of my wrist where my pulse hammered wildly against his lips.

“Sleep well, Norah,” he whispered against my skin. “Tomorrow, we begin auditing the European portfolio together. You’ll sit right beside me.”
I closed the heavy door, leaning my back against the wood as my heart hammered against my ribs. I was trapped in the web of a ruthless mafia boss, surrounded by luxury, protected by lethal force, and yet, for the first time in ten years, I didn't feel entirely alone.
