Chapter 8 - The Reckoning at Miller & Sterling

The morning sun broke over the Pacific with blinding, golden brilliance, casting warm light across the rumpled white sheets of the master suite. I woke up wrapped securely in Dominic’s arms, his heavy arm draped possessively over my waist, pinning me gently against his solid chest.

For the first time in my life, waking up didn't bring a wave of crushing anxiety about medication schedules, unpaid bills, or empty rooms. It brought a profound, unshakable peace.

Dominic stirred beside me, his dark eyes opening instantly with razor-sharp clarity. A faint, rare smile touched the corners of his mouth as he looked down at me.

“Good morning, my quiet auditor,” he murmured, pressing a warm kiss to my forehead.

“Good morning,” I replied, a genuine smile spreading across my face.

“Today,” Dominic said, his tone instantly shifting from tender intimacy to cold, calculated executive authority, “we settle accounts with Miller & Sterling.”

Two hours later, dressed in a sharp charcoal pantsuit that mirrored the quiet power of the man walking beside me, I stepped out of Dominic’s armored Mercedes in front of the gleaming glass-and-steel skyscraper housing my accounting firm.

Vincent and two other enforcers flanked us as we strode through the revolving glass doors into the pristine corporate lobby. The receptionists stared in slack-jawed shock as Dominic Gallow—the notoriously reclusive mafia kingpin whose name was whispered only in hushed tones across the city’s financial boardrooms—walked purposefully toward the private elevator banks, holding my hand firmly in his.

We bypassed the executive reception desk entirely and swept into the corner office of senior partner Arthur Miller.

Arthur looked up from his mahogany desk, his face flushing crimson with a mixture of outrage and sudden, cold dread as he saw Dominic walk in, followed closely by his armed enforcers. And then his eyes landed on me standing beside him.

“Norah? What is the meaning of this—?” Arthur stammered, standing up so abruptly his leather chair rolled back and crashed against the wall.

“Sit down, Arthur,” Dominic commanded smoothly, taking a seat in front of the desk and pulling me down beside him.

I reached into my leather portfolio, pulled out a thick, meticulously organized forensic audit report, and slid it across the polished mahogany surface right in front of Arthur’s trembling hands.

“You used Frank as a proxy to siphon three hundred twelve thousand dollars from the Cobalt Lounge over the past eight months,” I stated, my voice completely steady, clear, and devoid of the timid hesitation that had defined my decade at the firm. “You routed the funds through four offshore shell companies in Zurich, using my name on the secondary review logs to ensure that if anyone ever investigated, the blame would fall squarely on a junior auditor who had no family to defend her.”

Arthur’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. He opened and closed his mouth like a landed fish, unable to utter a single coherent syllable.

“The digital trails are mirrored on secure servers outside your jurisdiction,” Dominic added, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the desk. His dark eyes locked onto the terrified partner with lethal precision. “By noon, the federal tax authorities, the state banking commission, and every major media outlet in the country will receive complete copies of this dossier.”

“You... you can’t do this!” Arthur choked out, sweating profusely. “You’ll destroy the firm!”

“The firm was built on stolen money and cowardice,” Dominic replied coldly, standing up to his full, imposing height. “My auditor has cleaned house. Consider this your final balancing entry, Arthur.”

As we turned and walked out of the office, leaving the senior partner collapsed in his chair, shaking like a leaf, I felt a monumental weight lift from my shoulders. The past was finally buried. My debt was paid. My voice had been reclaimed.
