Chapter 6 - Secrets in the Offshore Vaults

The storm raged all night, lashing the coastal bluffs with wind and relentless rain, but inside the master suite, the world had narrowed down to the quiet, glowing perimeter of Dominic’s private library.

We sat together on a leather Chesterfield sofa facing a crackling stone fireplace. The tension from the docks had dissolved into something heavy, electric, and charged with unspoken anticipation. Dominic had shed his suit jacket, his white shirt collar open, pouring two glasses of amber whiskey from a heavy crystal decanter. He handed one to me, his fingers brushing against mine.

“You’ve been unusually quiet all evening, Norah,” Dominic noted, taking a slow sip of his drink. “Is the shipping audit still troubling you?”

I stared down into the golden liquid of my glass, watching the firelight dance across the surface. “The shipping audit is fine. I traced the remaining shell accounts this afternoon. The discrepancies lead straight to a holding corporation registered under an alias in Zurich.”

Dominic raised an eyebrow, genuinely impressed. “And whose name is on the beneficial ownership registry?”

“That’s the problem,” I whispered, turning my head to look directly into his dark eyes. “It’s not Victor Moretti. It’s not Frank. The ultimate beneficiary of those siphoned millions is registered under a trust tied directly to Miller & Sterling—my own accounting firm.”

The silence in the library grew so profound that the crackle of the fireplace sounded like gunfire.

Dominic didn't look surprised. Instead, a slow, dark smirk curved the corner of his mouth. “Your senior partners have been skimming off my lounge’s revenue streams for over a year, using Frank as their proxy to funnel the cash.”

“They used me,” I whispered, a sudden wave of humiliation and betrayal washing over me. “They didn't assign me to fix Frank’s disaster because I was the best auditor. They sent me because they thought I was naive, invisible, and desperate enough not to look too closely at the secondary ledger loops.”

“They miscalculated,” Dominic said softly, setting his glass down on the mahogany table with a sharp clack. He shifted closer, sliding his arm along the back of the sofa behind my shoulders. “They looked at a quiet, overworked woman who spent her twenties changing diapers and saw an easy patsy who would quietly cover their tracks.”

He reached out, his warm fingertips gently cupping my cheek, tilting my face up toward his.

“They didn't realize that beneath that quiet exterior lies the sharpest mind in this city—and a woman who deserves far more than a cramped cubicle and a lifetime of being overlooked.”

My breath hitched as his thumb traced the line of my jaw, moving slowly down to my throat where my pulse hammered wildly. The warmth of his skin, the scent of expensive bourbon and cedar, and the fierce, possessive gleam in his dark eyes stripped away every defensive wall I had built over the past decade.

“Dominic,” I breathed out, my voice barely audible above the crackle of the fire.

“Look at me, Norah,” he commanded softly, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly rasp that sent a shiver straight to my core. “Tell me what you want.”

I stared up at him, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. For twenty-eight years, I had wanted safety, stability, and someone—anyone—to notice that I existed. Now, sitting beside a man who commanded an underworld empire, I realized I wanted something infinitely more dangerous.

May you like

“I want you,” I whispered, the confession slipping past my lips before I could second-guess it.

Dominic’s eyes flared with a dark, triumphant fire. Without another word, his lips crashed down onto mine in a fierce, consuming kiss that swept away every remaining doubt, hesitation, and fear.
