Chapter 5 - Blood on the Docks and the Unspoken Vow

The warehouse in District Four smelled of damp concrete, diesel fuel, and rotting salt spray. Rain hammered violently against the corrugated iron roof, drowning out the distant roar of the ocean.

I sat inside the bulletproof rear cabin of Dominic’s Mercedes, parked a hundred yards away from the dilapidated shipping warehouse where the meeting with Victor Moretti was set to take place. Through the reinforced tinted glass, I watched Dominic step out into the downpour, flanked by four towering enforcers holding heavy black umbrellas.

Even from a distance, Dominic radiated terrifying, effortless authority. He didn't flinch as the thunder rolled or as half a dozen armed men stepped out from the shadows of the warehouse to meet him.

Ten minutes later, the sharp, distinct crack of a silenced pistol echoed over the sound of the rain.

My hands flew to my mouth, my heart leaping into my throat. I had known intellectually that Dominic Gallow was a dangerous criminal, a man who ordered executions without blinking an eye, but hearing the tangible evidence of that violence shattered any remaining illusions I harbored about my fairy-tale captivity.

The passenger door of the Mercedes clicked open, and Dominic slid inside, shaking the rainwater from the shoulders of his charcoal suit. He didn't look flustered, nor did he look triumphant; his expression was as cool and unreadable as marble.

He glanced over at me, noticing the pale, trembling terror in my eyes, and sighed softly.

“I told you to stay in the car,” he murmured, reaching out to wrap his warm, heavy hand over my cold, shaking fingers.

“Was someone...?” I couldn't bring myself to finish the question.

“Victor tried to negotiate with a bullet,” Dominic replied smoothly, signaling the driver to pull away from the docks. “He won’t make that mistake again. Neither will anyone else in this city.”

He squeezed my hand gently, his thumb rubbing soothing circles against my knuckles. The juxtaposition between the lethal kingpin who had just executed a rival in a rain-soaked alley and the man sitting beside me, offering quiet comfort and absolute security, was staggering.

“You’re safe, Norah,” he whispered, leaning closer until his lips brushed against my temple. “Nobody touches what belongs to Dominic Gallow.”

As the armored car sped away from the docks into the safety of the estate, I realized with a sudden, startling clarity that the fear I had initially felt toward him had entirely transformed. It wasn't terror anymore. It was an intoxicating, reckless addiction to the man who had pulled me out of my lonely, forgotten life and claimed me as his own.
