Chapter 4 - The Sub-Basement Archive and the Digital Trail of Blood

The sub-basement archives beneath Pier 44 smelled permanently of damp concrete, rusting iron, and decades of forgotten maritime paperwork that nobody cared to read.
Valerie swiped her old archival security badge against the rusted electronic scanner mounted beside the heavy steel door, holding her breath as the red LED light flickered.
BEEP.
The green light flashed, and the heavy door unlatched with a loud pneumatic hiss, welcoming her into the dark, humming sanctuary of the secondary server racks.
She hurried inside, slamming the heavy door shut behind her and locking the manual deadbolt from the inside to ensure nobody could interrupt her digital forensics work.
The room was illuminated only by the frantic blinking of amber and green server lights, casting long, eerie shadows across the rows of towering mainframe cabinets.
Valerie dropped her canvas bag onto a metal desk, pulled out her encrypted laptop, and plugged a custom bypass cable directly into the primary data port of the archival mainframe.
Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed, executing a series of deep-level terminal commands to override the firewall and access the core transaction logs of the past seventy-two hours.
"Come on… show me who touched the master key," she muttered under her breath, her green eyes reflecting the scrolling lines of green hexadecimal code rushing down her screen.
Suddenly, a severe warning dialog box popped up in the center of her monitor, flashing a bright crimson alert:
WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED FROM EXTERNAL IP 192.168.44.12.
Valerie froze. Someone was actively scrubbing the server logs in real-time from an off-site location, trying to erase the exact digital footprints she was desperately trying to uncover.
"Oh, no you don't," she hissed angrily, activating a counter-trace script she had secretly coded into the network months prior just in case an internal security breach ever occurred.
Her screen split into two windows, tracking the incoming data packets and bouncing the trace signal back across the Manhattan fiber-optic grid through three encrypted proxy servers.
The IP address wasn't coming from the Russian syndicate, nor was it coming from the rival Darrow family downtown.
It was originating from a private corporate terminal located on the thirty-second floor of the Feldman Legal Tower—the very firm where Mara Feldman presided as Sebastian’s chief attorney.
Valerie’s breath caught in her throat as the cold, devastating reality of the situation washed over her like a freezing wave.
Mara Feldman hadn't just called Sebastian with panicked warnings about the federal raid; she was the one who engineered the entire setup from the inside out.
She had used her legal clearance, her intimate knowledge of Sebastian’s security protocols, and her access to the judicial payroll to frame the syndicate boss and hand his entire empire over to a mysterious buyer.
Before Valerie could screenshot the damning trace logs and export the evidence to an encrypted flash drive, a heavy, metallic thud echoed loudly from the hallway outside the archive door.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Someone was trying the manual deadbolt from the outside with a heavy industrial master key, forcing the metal tumblers to grind aggressively against the frame.
Valerie’s heart hammered wildly against her ribs as she desperately hit the export command on her laptop, watching the progress bar crawl agonizingly slowly across the screen: 78%… 82%… 86%…
The archive door groaned under a massive, crushing impact as someone threw their entire body weight against the steel panels, trying to snap the reinforced hinges.
"Open the door, Valerie! I know you're in there!" a sharp, feminine voice hissed through the acoustic vent above the desk.
May you like
Mara Feldman.
She hadn't sent a hit squad; she had come down to the waterfront herself to tie up the final loose end of her multi-million-dollar corporate betrayal.
