Chapter 9 - The Breach of the DOJ Server and the Midnight Summons

The federal courthouse in downtown Manhattan stood like a monolithic fortress of gray granite against the bruised, stormy sky of the pre-dawn hours.
Inside a secure auxiliary server room on the fourth floor, Nick Vance tapped away at a modified federal terminal, bypassing the primary firewall using an administrative backdoor he had retained from his active-duty days.
Valerie stood directly behind him, her eyes glued to the glowing monitor as the green progress bar indicating the upload of Mara Feldman’s digital confession surged forward: 65%… 80%… 95%… 100%.
UPLOAD SUCCESSFUL. FILE ROUTED TO OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL.
A collective sigh of relief escaped Valerie’s lips, her shoulders slumping as the overwhelming tension of the past twelve hours finally began to drain from her exhausted body.
"It’s done," Nick murmured, ejecting the flash drive from the terminal and pocketing it securely. "The Inspector General’s office has the complete file. Federal marshals are already en route to execute an emergency release order for Sebastian."
Before Valerie could even celebrate the victory, the security console on the wall beside the terminal suddenly flared red, emitting a loud, pulsing warning tone.
WARNING: INTRUSION ALERT ON FLOOR FOUR. SYSTEM LOCKDOWN INITIATED.
Nick’s expression darkened instantly. "They tracked the IP handshake. Mara’s automated firewall security must have flagged the backdoor upload the second it hit the server."
Heavy tactical footsteps echoed loudly down the granite-floored hallway outside the server room, accompanied by the cold, metallic sound of rifle bolts slamming home.
"Federal agents! Open the door!" a harsh voice shouted from the corridor, followed immediately by the devastating impact of a battering ram smashing against the reinforced wood.
The door splintered inward, and three armed federal marshals—completely loyal to Mara Feldman’s corrupted payroll—flooded into the server room with weapons raised.
"Don't move! Hands behind your head!" the lead marshal screamed, his tactical flashlight blinding them in the confined space.
Nick didn't flinch. He raised his hands slowly, stepping slightly in front of Valerie to shield her from the direct line of fire, his eyes locked onto the corrupt officers with utter contempt.
"You're a little too late, boys," Nick said smoothly, gesturing toward the green confirmation message still glowing brightly on the server monitor. "The Inspector General already downloaded the file ten seconds ago. Your entire syndicate is finished."
The lead marshal hesitated, glancing nervously at the monitor before raising his weapon higher with a desperate snarl. "Shut up and cuff them!"
Suddenly, the heavy glass windows overlooking the courthouse plaza shattered inward with an explosive, deafening roar.
A black tactical helicopter hovered just outside the fourth-floor window, its spotlight blinding the corrupt marshals as heavily armed syndicate-breaking operatives dropped onto the ledge.
Before the corrupt officers could turn their weapons toward the window, a wave of stun grenades detonated inside the room, filling the space with blinding white light and deafening thunder.
Valerie squeezed her eyes shut and dropped to the floor, covering her head as the sound of close-quarters tactical combat erupted around her in a flurry of shouted orders and falling equipment.
When the smoke finally cleared a few agonizing seconds later, the three corrupt marshals were zip-tied and unconscious on the floor.

Standing in the ruined doorway of the server room, lowering a smoking tactical rifle, was a tall, imposing figure wearing a customized charcoal suit that smelled faintly of expensive scotch and danger.
Sebastian Ward.
