Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Dark and Mara’s Deadly Ultimatum

The archival door groaned again under another violent, bone-shattering impact, the reinforced steel frame bending inward as the heavy deadbolt began to strip the concrete wall.
Valerie stared frantically at her laptop screen as the progress bar hit 98%… 99%… COMPLETE.
She yanked the encrypted flash drive out of the USB port just as a deafening CRACK echoed through the sub-basement.
The archival door burst inward, the heavy steel hinges snapping entirely off their bolts and crashing heavily onto the concrete floor in a cloud of thick, choking dust.
Standing in the ruined doorway was Mara Feldman, her sharp designer suit immaculate, her expression devoid of any professional warmth, holding a silenced automatic pistol in her perfectly manicured hand.
"You really should have stayed in the penthouse, Valerie," Mara said, her voice smooth and venomous as she stepped over the wreckage of the door into the hum of the server racks.
Valerie slowly backed away from the metal desk, her hand sliding into the deep pocket of her wool coat where her fingers wrapped tightly around the cold casing of the flash drive.
"You framed Sebastian," Valerie accused, her voice shaking slightly, yet carrying a fierce, unwavering defiance that made Mara’s eyes narrow with irritation.
"Sebastian built his entire empire on blood and intimidation, thinking he could control every lawyer, judge, and dockworker in this city forever," Mara scoffed, stepping closer with the gun raised.
"He got lazy, Valerie. He started thinking with his heart instead of his wallet—taking in stray archivists, getting distracted by little bedtime games while his empire was ripe for the taking."
Mara’s words hit Valerie like a physical blow, reminding her of the blood-stained sheets in the penthouse and the vulnerability Sebastian had shown her just hours before.
"You sold him out to the Darrow family," Valerie spat out bitterly. "How much did they pay you to hand over the New York waterfront?"
"More money than you could spend in ten lifetimes," Mara smiled coldly, leveling the silenced barrel directly at Valerie’s chest. "And the best part is, the federal prosecutor believes every single forged document I handed over."
"Except I have the original trace logs right here," Valerie countered, holding up the small flash drive between her fingers with a sharp, victorious smile. "The moment I sync this with the federal marshals' public server, your entire conspiracy falls apart."
Mara didn't panic. She didn't drop her weapon or scream for reinforcements. Instead, she let out a low, patronizing laugh that echoed chillingly off the concrete walls.
"And who do you think is going to receive that file, Valerie?" Mara asked smoothly. "Every single routing endpoint in this building is currently routed through my private server cluster."
Before Valerie could process the warning, a sharp, piercing alarm echoed through the archive room as the automated fire-suppression system suddenly hissed to life overhead.

Thick, choking halon gas began pouring from the ceiling vents, instantly displacing the oxygen in the room and filling the space with a blinding, white fog.
"Say goodbye to Sebastian, Valerie," Mara’s voice echoed distantly through the chemical fog as the attorney turned and slipped out through the ruined doorway into the darkness.
