Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Old Fish Market and Nick Vance’s Gamble

The old fish market at the southern tip of the Manhattan waterfront had been abandoned by commercial trawlers years ago, leaving behind a decaying cavern of rusted corrugated iron and rotting wooden docks.
The rain continued to pour down in relentless sheets, drumming a deafening rhythm against the tin roof as Valerie slipped quietly through the shadows of the empty warehouse floor.
She kept her hood pulled low, her eyes scanning every dark corner for any sign of Mara Feldman’s operatives or corrupt federal agents tailing her movements.
A pair of heavy headlights cut through the thick sheets of rain outside, illuminating the cracked concrete apron as a black unmarked sedan pulled silently up to the loading bay doors.
The driver’s side door opened, and Nick Vance stepped out into the downpour, wearing a worn leather jacket and holding a black umbrella to shield himself from the relentless storm.
He looked older than he did in his official federal dossier, with deep lines etched around his eyes, but his posture remained as rigid and commanding as ever.
Valerie stepped out from behind a towering stack of wooden crates, her hands raised slightly to show she wasn't carrying a weapon, though her fingers remained buried in her coat pocket.
"You're taking a massive risk showing up here with half the Darrow family looking for that flash drive," Nick said, walking toward her with measured, cautious strides.
"Sebastian took a massive risk keeping me alive when he found out I knew where all his bodies were buried," Valerie countered fiercely, not backing down an inch from the former federal investigator.
"Do you have the file or not?" Nick demanded, stopping three feet away from her, his sharp eyes searching her pale, rain-streaked face.
Valerie pulled the small black flash drive out of her pocket and held it out across the open space between them like an offering of absolute truce.
"It’s all right here," she said quietly. "The server logs, the proxy routing endpoints, and Mara Feldman’s personal digital signature executing the transfer orders at 2:15 AM."
Nick reached out and took the flash drive from her hand, turning the plastic casing over in his palm before slipping it securely into the interior pocket of his leather jacket.
"If this is legitimate, it completely dismantles the federal prosecution's case against Sebastian," Nick admitted, his expression darkening with grim realization. "Which means Mara is going to come after both of us with everything she has."
"She already tried to gas me in the sub-basement archive," Valerie replied bitterly. "She thinks I'm dead."
"People like Mara Feldman don't leave loose ends, Valerie," Nick warned, scanning the dark perimeter of the abandoned warehouse with sudden, intense suspicion.
"If she realizes you survived that halon room, she won't just send hired goons—she'll trigger every federal asset on her payroll to brand you as an international fugitive."
Before Valerie could respond, the sound of screeching tires echoed sharply outside the corrugated metal loading bay doors, cutting through the steady roar of the storm.
Three black SUVs crashed through the rusted chain-link fence surrounding the fish market, their high-beam headlights instantly blinding them in a wall of aggressive white illumination.
"Get down!" Nick shouted, grabbing Valerie by the shoulder and shoving her hard behind a massive stack of salt-cured fish tanks just as automatic gunfire erupted.
Bullets tore through the thin corrugated iron walls of the warehouse, sending a shower of lethal metal fragments and splintered wood raining down all around them.
Federal tactical gear flashed in the headlights outside as dozens of armed operatives swarmed the perimeter, screaming orders to secure the warehouse and execute on sight.
"They tracked the burner phone signal," Nick cursed under his breath, drawing his own heavy-caliber pistol from his shoulder holster as he returned suppressing fire toward the open doorway.

"How do we get out of here?" Valerie yelled over the deafening roar of automatic gunfire chewing up the concrete floor just inches from where they crouched.
"The drainage tunnels beneath the pier," Nick yelled back, kicking open a rusted metal grate set into the floor near the back of the fish tanks. "Move, now!"
