Chapter 10 - The Ashes of the Syndicate

The federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was surrounded by a sea of media vans, flashing camera bulbs, and reporters shouting over one another as federal marshals escorted former Judge Montigue and three high-ranking syndicate associates up the grand stone steps in heavy metal shackles.
The Montigue dynasty had officially collapsed in a single, devastating twenty-four-hour window, its assets seized by the federal government, its leadership eradicated, and its dark secrets exposed to the glare of public record.
Inside the Obsidian Estate, miles away from the media circus and the chaos of the city streets, the atmosphere was peaceful, quiet, and profoundly secure.
Lily sat on a plush velvet sofa in the grand parlor, reading a brightly colored storybook aloud to little Ethan, who was giggling happily as he pointed at pictures of animals with his good hand.
Across the room, standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the sun-drenched gardens, Victor Blackwood watched them both with a quiet, unbreakable sense of peace.
His phone buzzed in his pocket.
He pulled it out, glanced at the encrypted screen displaying a final confirmation message from the federal prosecutor’s office—“All indictments locked. Case closed. Target neutralized permanently.”—and pressed a single button to delete the message forever.
The war was over.
The ghosts of the past had been laid to rest in the cold earth where they belonged.
Victor slipped the phone back into his pocket, walked slowly across the Persian rug, and sat down on the sofa right beside Lily and his son.
He reached out, his massive, calloused hand gently resting over Lily’s fingers as she turned the page of the storybook.
Lily looked up, her heart skipping a beat as she met the warm, obsidian depths of his eyes.

"It’s really over, isn't it?" she whispered.
"It's over," Victor confirmed softly, a rare, gentle smile gracing his rugged features.
