Chapter 12 - The Whisper in the East Wing

The quiet peace of the Obsidian Estate was shattered at precisely 2:14 AM by a sharp, automated alarm tone that chimed softly on the encrypted security console installed beside Victor’s bed.
Victor was awake in a single, fluid motion, his hand sliding under his pillow to grip the matte-black grip of his sidearm before his feet even touched the hardwood floor.
He rolled out of bed, pulling on a dark tactical sweater, and moved toward the hallway with the silent, lethal efficiency of an apex predator.
The alarm wasn't a red-alert perimeter breach from the outer gates; it was a silent yellow-zone sensor ping originating from the eastern guest wing—specifically, the room directly adjacent to Lily’s quarters.
Victor slipped down the darkened hallway like a ghost, his tactical boots making zero sound against the thick wool carpeting.
As he approached Lily’s door, he noticed it was cracked open about two inches, a thin sliver of pale moonlight spilling out onto the floor.
He raised his weapon, planting his shoulder against the doorframe, and pushed the door inward with a sudden, forceful shove.
Inside, the room was bathed in pale shadows.
Lily was thrashing violently beneath the heavy down comforter, gasping for air, her face twisted in an expression of absolute, paralyzing terror.
"No... please... don't touch him!" Lily screamed out in her sleep, her hands clawing desperately at the sheets. "Get away from him! Leave him alone!"
She was trapped in the suffocating grip of a night terror, reliving the brutal trauma of the foyer attack where Serena had pinned her to the floor and threatened to throw her into the lake.
Victor didn't hesitate.
He lowered his weapon, securing the safety with a soft click, and crossed the room in two long strides.
He sat down heavily on the edge of the mattress, dropping his weapon onto the nightstand, and reached out to gently catch Lily’s flailing hands before she could scratch her own face.
"Lily," Victor commanded softly, his deep, rumbling voice vibrating against the panic-stricken air of the room.
"Lily, wake up. Look at me. You're safe."
Her eyes snapped open, wide and bloodshot, staring blindly at the ceiling for a terrifying second before she finally focused on the rugged, intensely familiar face looming above her in the dark.
Without a moment of hesitation, the traumatized young woman lunged forward, throwing her arms around Victor’s neck and burying her face deep into the crook of his shoulder.
She sobbed uncontrollably, her entire body shaking with the delayed shock of months of suppressed fear, isolation, and pain.
Victor froze for a fraction of a second, entirely unaccustomed to receiving raw, unedited human vulnerability.
Then, slowly, his massive arms wrapped around her back, pulling her slender frame tightly against his chest in a protective, unbreakable embrace.
"I’ve got you," Victor whispered into her hair, his voice rough with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to feel.
May you like
"Nobody is ever going to hurt you again, Lily. I swear to you on my life, my soul, and my blood. No one will ever touch you in this house."
She clung to him like a drowning sailor holding onto a lifeline, her tears soaking through the fabric of his tactical sweater as the terrifying memories slowly receded back into the dark where they belonged.
