Chapter 8 - The Midnight Consultation

Upstairs in the master study, the room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a crackling stone fireplace and soft brass desk lamps.
Lily sat in a plush wingback armchair by the fire, wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket, sipping a cup of chamomile tea that one of the senior housekeepers had prepared for her.
Across the room, Ethan was sleeping soundly in a custom-built mahogany crib stationed safely in the corner, his little arm resting comfortably in its lightweight cast, his breathing light and regular.
The heavy oak door opened silently, and Victor walked in, shrugging off his holster and laying his polished sidearm onto the mahogany desk before walking over to pour himself a glass of aged bourbon.
He looked tired—not the tired of a normal man after a hard day’s work, but the bone-deep, chronic exhaustion of someone who carried the weight of an entire underworld empire on his shoulders.
"Is she broken?" Lily asked softly, breaking the quiet crackle of the fireplace.
Victor took a slow sip of his bourbon, the amber liquid burning his throat, before turning to look at her.
"She signed the confession twenty minutes ago," Victor replied, his voice devoid of any triumph.
"Every offshore account is frozen. Her father’s network is dismantled. By sunrise, the Montigue family name will be nothing more than a historical footnote in Chicago’s criminal archives."
Lily let out a long, shuddering breath, staring down into her teacup as the last remaining tendrils of adrenaline finally left her system.
"And what happens to me now, Mr. Blackwood?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"Once the lawyers finish drafting the final affidavits, and the federal prosecutors have my sworn testimony... can I go back to my apartment? To my college classes?"
Victor walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping a few feet away from her chair.
He looked down at the young nanny, observing the quiet courage, the fierce loyalty, and the unyielding moral compass that had made her risk her own life to save a baby she didn't even share blood with.
"Go back?" Victor repeated quietly.
"Lily, do you honestly believe I would ever let you walk back out into a city where every surviving associate of the Montigue family is hunting for the witness who destroyed their empire?"
Lily’s breath caught in her throat.
"You're... you're saying I can't leave?"
"I am saying," Victor corrected, his tone absolute and immovable, "that your life as an ordinary student working part-time jobs is over. You saw too much, you did too much, and you mean too much to my son."
He knelt down slowly, resting one knee on the Persian rug so he was looking directly into her wide, startled eyes.
"Stay here," Victor commanded, his voice dropping into a soft, resonant velvet.
"Be Ethan’s mother in full. Be the heart of this house. You will want for nothing—every resource, every protection, every privilege of the Blackwood empire will be yours to command."
Lily stared into his dark, obsidian eyes, seeing not the terrifying mafia kingpin who executed enemies in the dark, but a broken, fiercely protective father who had finally found someone he could trust with his entire world.
"And if I say no?" Lily whispered, testing the boundaries of her own freedom.

A slow, faint ghost of a smile touched the corner of Victor’s lips.
"You can try," Victor said softly. "Though I promise you, my security detail is far too stubborn to let you get past the front gates."
