Chapter 9 - The Sunrise Alliance

The first rays of golden autumn sunlight broke over the Chicago skyline, casting long, brilliant beams across the manicured lawns and towering iron gates of the Blackwood estate.

Inside the master nursery, little Ethan stirred in his crib, letting out a soft, sleepy yawn before stretching his tiny legs and blinking his big, dark eyes open.

Lily, who had spent the entire night sitting in the armchair reading medical journals and keeping watch over the baby, smiled warmly and stood up, walking over to scoop the little boy up into her arms.

Ethan cooped happily, wrapping his good arm around her neck and burying his face in her shoulder, perfectly content and completely healed from the trauma of the previous day.

Carrying the baby downstairs into the massive, sunlit kitchen, Lily found Victor already sitting at the polished marble island, reviewing a fresh stack of encrypted intelligence reports while sipping a cup of strong black coffee.

He looked up as they entered, his severe expression instantly softening as his dark eyes locked onto his son.

"Morning, little man," Victor murmured, standing up and walking over to gently kiss the top of Ethan’s head.

He then looked up at Lily, taking in her tired eyes and the faint remnants of bruising along her jawline.

"Did you sleep at all?" Victor asked, frowning slightly.

"I rested enough," Lily replied, offering a reassuring smile as she adjusted Ethan on her hip.

"Besides, someone had to make sure he didn't try to climb out of his crib."

Victor let out a low, genuine chuckle—a sound so rare and warm that it seemed to instantly brighten the cavernous kitchen.

"Sit down, Lily," he instructed gently, pulling out the velvet-lined chair beside him.

"The head chef prepared breakfast. And after we eat, my legal team is arriving to finalize the permanent restructuring of the household staff and security clearances."

Lily took a seat, setting Ethan in a high chair that had been specially modified with extra padding.

"Mr. Blackwood," Lily began hesitantly, buttering a piece of warm toast.

"About what you said last night... about staying here permanently."

Victor stopped halfway to his coffee cup, his obsidian eyes locking onto hers with sudden, intense scrutiny.

"Did you change your mind?" he asked, his voice dropping an octave.

Lily looked down at her plate, then back up, meeting his terrifying gaze with a steady, resolute calm.

"No," Lily said softly.

"I just have one condition."

Victor raised an eyebrow, a flicker of curiosity crossing his rugged features.

"Name it. Anything within my power is yours."

"No more bodyguards inside the nursery," Lily stated firmly.

"If I am going to be the heart of this house, I won't have armed men standing over my shoulder while I'm reading bedtime stories to Ethan. This has to feel like a real home, not a prison cell."

Victor stared at her in silence for three long, agonizing seconds.

Then, slowly, a deep, triumphant smile spread across the face of Chicago’s most feared mafia boss.

"Deal," Victor said, raising his coffee cup in a quiet toast.

"From this second on, Lily, this house is a home. And woe to anyone who ever dares to try and change that."
