Chapter 6 - The Obsidian Fortress

The armored convoy of three matte-black Mercedes-Maybachs cut through the midnight Chicago traffic like a knife through silk, sliding effortlessly past police barricades that parted at the mere flash of a high-security syndicate badge.

In the backseat of the lead vehicle, little Ethan slept soundly against Lily’s chest, his tiny arm encased in a lightweight carbon-fiber cast, his breathing steady and untroubled.

Beside them sat Victor Blackwood, his massive frame radiating an aura of intense, coiled focus as he scrolled through real-time satellite feeds and intercepted encrypted communications on a military-grade tactical tablet.

"We’re entering estate perimeter," the lead driver’s voice crackled through the secure intercom. "All internal and external security checkpoints are locked down. Perimeter guards report zero unauthorized movement."

"Good," Victor replied, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. "Double the watch rotation around the eastern wing. I want three snipers on the master roof and two armed details stationed directly outside Miss Lily’s quarters."

Lily looked up from sleeping Ethan, her eyes widening in surprise as she processed the sheer scale of the security measures.

"Mr. Blackwood, you don't need to turn the entire mansion into a military compound just for me," Lily protested softly, shifting slightly so as not to wake the resting baby.

"I’m just a nanny. Once Serena is dealt with—"

"You are not 'just a nanny' anymore, Lily," Victor interrupted, his obsidian eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that brooked zero argument.

"You are the sole witness to an attempted assassination of my heir and a high-treason conspiracy involving the top tiers of the Chicago syndicate. Until every last associate of the Montigue family is permanently neutralized, your life belongs to the security perimeter of this estate."

The convoy smoothly passed through the towering wrought-iron gates of the Blackwood mansion, rolling up the winding marble driveway and coming to a dead stop in front of the grand illuminated foyer.

The doors swung open instantly.

A platoon of elite, heavily armed security operatives stood at attention along the double-height staircase, their faces masked behind tactical visors, waiting for their commander’s orders.

Victor stepped out of the vehicle first, turning back to extend a massive, calloused hand to help Lily out of the plush leather interior while deftly shielding her from the chilly night air with his broad shoulders.

"Welcome to your new home, Lily," Victor said quietly, his tone softening just a fraction as he guided her toward the grand entrance.

"From this second onward, nobody touches you, nobody threatens you, and nobody enters this estate without my explicit, written command."

As Lily stepped back across the threshold of the foyer where she had nearly lost her life only hours prior, she realized that the house had fundamentally changed.

The cold, sterile opulence had been replaced by a fortress of absolute, unyielding protection.

And at the center of that fortress stood the most feared man in the city, acting not just as a syndicate kingpin, but as an absolute guardian sworn to her defense.
