Chapter 13 - THE PENTHOUSE SANCTUARY: WHY MY NEW LIFE WITH LILY WAS WORTH EVERY DROP OF DEFIANCE

Back in downtown Boulder, the evening city lights were twinkling like a carpet of diamonds spread out beneath the windows of my new penthouse apartment.

I sat in a comfortable rocking chair by the nursery window, cradling sleeping Lily against my chest. Her breathing was soft and even, her tiny hands curled into sweet little fists against her pink pajamas.

My phone rested on the side table, completely silent.

No more frantic text messages from Luca. No more demands from Wendy. No more arrogant ultimatums from Stephanie.

The legal process servers had delivered their payload, Phoebe Reed was handling the divorce proceedings with surgical precision, and my business operations were running at peak efficiency.

The seventy-two-hour nightmare that had begun with freezing rain and a locked front door had transformed into an absolute, unassailable triumph of self-preservation.

Evelyn walked quietly into the nursery, carrying a mug of hot chamomile tea and a plate of dark chocolate truffles. She set them down on the side table, smiled warmly down at Lily, and whispered, “How’s my favorite niece doing?”

“Sleeping like an angel,” I whispered back, looking up at my sister with a deep, radiant smile. “She doesn't even know what a mortgage is yet.”

“Good,” Evelyn laughed softly, pulling up a chair and sitting down beside me. “Because her mother just ensured she’ll never have to worry about a single man taking her home, her money, or her peace of mind.”

I looked out the window at the magnificent peaks of the Rocky Mountains rising majestically against the star-filled Colorado sky.

When Luca locked me out on Redwood Crest Drive, he thought he was ending my story.

He thought he was the master of the castle, the king of the mountain, the man who held all the cards.

He had no idea that I wasn't just a homeowner.

I was the architect.

And when you build the entire empire with your own hands, you don't lose the kingdom when a parasite tries to steal the keys—you simply burn the old gates down, lock the door forever, and build something ten times more magnificent where nobody can ever reach you again.
