Chapter 2 - THE ESCAPE TO EVELYN’S SANCTUARY: DEVISING THE ULTIMATE LEGAL STRIKE

Ten minutes later, the headlights of Evelyn’s sleek black Audi swept across the driveway of Redwood Crest Drive, cutting through the dense Colorado fog.
She threw the car into park, jumped out into the freezing rain with an oversized umbrella, and practically ran across the stone path to shield me and newborn Lily from the storm.
“Give her to me,” Evelyn whispered fiercely, gently lifting Lily from my arms and tucking her safely inside her warm down coat before opening the passenger door for me.
Once we were inside the heated interior of the Audi, Evelyn turned to look at me, her eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of fury and protectiveness. “Are you bleeding? Do you need to see a doctor? I swear to God, if Luca has compromised your postpartum recovery, I will drive this car straight through his front gates tomorrow morning.”
“I’m okay, Ev,” I said, leaning back against the leather headrest, closing my eyes as the heater blasted warm air over my damp clothes. “Just exhausted. And furious.”
“Furious isn't a strong enough word,” Evelyn snapped, shifting the car into reverse and pulling away from the estate. “That ungrateful, gold-digging parasite. He moves his mother and sister into your house, treats your hard-earned wealth like his personal trust fund, and the moment you’re in the hospital having his child, he locks you out? What kind of sociopath does that?”
“A sociopath who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else,” I replied, opening my phone and looking at the screen. “He thinks he won. He thinks that by locking me out while I was vulnerable, he’s forced me into a position of weakness where I have to beg him to let me back in.”
“And what are we going to do?” Evelyn asked, glancing sideways at me as we merged onto the highway toward her downtown loft.
“We are going to sell the house out from under him,” I stated calmly.
Evelyn slammed her foot slightly on the gas pedal, a wicked, brilliant grin spreading across her face. “All cash?”
“All cash. Seventy-two-hour close. Phoebe is drafting the expedited sales contract right now.”

“And where will Luca and his royal family—Wendy and Stephanie—stay when they fly back from Miami expecting to lounge by the infinity pool?”
“That,” I whispered, staring out the rain-streaked window at the glittering city lights, “is going to be the most expensive surprise of their lives.”
