Chapter 7 - THE ARRIVAL AT REDWOOD CREST DRIVE: WHEN THE SMART GATE SAYS 'ACCESS DENIED'

The silver Mercedes SUV that Luca had rented using my corporate credit card hummed smoothly as it turned off the main highway onto the winding, picturesque slopes of Redwood Crest Drive.
In the back seat, Wendy and Stephanie chattered excitedly about dinner plans, speculating whether I would have the good sense to order catering from downtown or if they would be forced to cook for themselves on their first night back.
“Honestly, if she hasn't stocked the refrigerator with organic groceries, I’m going to be very disappointed,” Wendy complained, adjusting her sunglasses.
Luca didn't answer. He navigated the familiar turns with effortless confidence, his eyes fixed on the iconic wrought-iron security gates of the estate as they loomed ahead through the pine trees.
He slowed the vehicle to a smooth stop right in front of the keypad pedestal.
Without hesitation, Luca leaned out the window and punched in his master smart-code—the one he had smugly programmed three days prior to lock me out in the freezing rain.
Beep-beep-beep-beep.
A harsh, electronic red light flashed across the keypad box.
Access Denied. Invalid Authorization Code.
Luca frowned, tapping the steering wheel with his fingers. He must have hit a wrong digit. He cleared the screen and carefully re-entered the eight-digit pin code.
Access Denied. Invalid Authorization Code.
Behind him in the passenger seat, Wendy leaned forward, frowning. “Luca, darling, why isn't the gate opening? Are the batteries dead?”
“The system runs on hardwired electrical with battery backup, Mom,” Luca muttered, annoyance creeping into his voice. “The keypad is probably glitching. Let me use the mobile app override.”
He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, unlocked the home security app, and tapped the virtual button labeled Front Gate Disarm.
Instead of the familiar mechanical clunk of the iron gates unlocking, a pop-up warning banner flashed bright red across his phone screen:
Error 403: Device Unregistered. Administrative Profile Revoked. Contact System Owner.
A cold prickle of unease rippled down the back of Luca’s neck. He tried refreshing the app. The entire property dashboard—which had previously displayed live security camera feeds, smart thermostat controls, and lighting schedules for his favorite rooms—was completely blank.
It was as if his user account had been deleted from existence.
“What is going on?” Stephanie muttered, leaning over the center console. “Why aren't we moving?”
“Just give me a second,” Luca snapped, putting the SUV in park, stepping out of the vehicle into the crisp afternoon air, and marching right up to the pedestrian intercom button beside the gate.
He pressed the call button once. Twice.

No ringing sound inside the house. Instead, a sleek, automated digital voice responded coldly from the speaker grille:
“Attention. You have reached a private residential property owned by Harrison Vance. This area is monitored by twenty-four-hour private security and video surveillance. Trespassing is strictly prohibited. Please vacate the premises immediately.”
