Chapter 5 - THE DAWN OF MONDAY MORNING: THE WIRE TRANSFER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Back in Boulder, Monday morning dawned crisp, clear, and brilliantly sunny, belying the absolute legal hurricane brewing over Redwood Crest Drive.
At precisely 9:00 AM, my phone buzzed on Evelyn’s kitchen island.
It was an encrypted notification from First National Title & Escrow.
“Wire transfer of $4,250,000.00 USD received in full from Buyer: Harrison Vance. Escrow closed successfully.”
I sat at the wooden table, holding a cup of fresh coffee in one hand, while Evelyn stood behind me peering over my shoulder with wide, disbelieving eyes.
“It’s done?” Evelyn whispered. “The house is sold?”
“The house is sold,” I replied, my voice remarkably steady as I stared at the confirmation screen.
Just then, my phone buzzed again. This time, it was Phoebe Reed calling from her office.
“Jessi, the new deed has been officially recorded with the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder’s office,” Phoebe reported, sounding exceptionally pleased with herself. “Harrison Vance’s legal team has already dispatched a private security detail to Redwood Crest Drive to change all exterior locks, disable the previous smart-home administrative profiles, and post notice of private property trespassing.”
“And Luca’s family’s personal belongings?” I asked.
“Packed into thirty heavy-duty plastic storage bins by professional movers this morning at 7:00 AM sharp,” Phoebe answered smoothly. “They are currently sitting in climate-controlled storage unit number 412 at Boulder Secure Storage, fully paid for by the buyer for the next thirty days. The receipt and access code have been emailed directly to Luca’s personal email address.”
I let out a long, slow breath, feeling the last lingering tension of the past three days melt away from my shoulders.

“I’m just an attorney enforcing the law, Jessi,” Phoebe chuckled softly. “Enjoy your morning. Let me know when you’re ready to file for divorce and full sole custody of Lily. My team is locked and loaded.”
