Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Throne

Six months after the gala, the Madison penthouse had been completely restored to its original, breathtaking perfection.
The antique French mirrors had been polished to a brilliant shine, reflecting the bright morning sun streaming over Central Park.
Every piece of furniture that had been touched by Lucy or Ethan had been donated to local charities and replaced with bespoke Scandinavian timber.
Victoria sat on the wide marble terrace, sipping a cup of freshly brewed Earl Grey tea while reading the morning financial papers.
The front page displayed a photograph of Richard Cole being led into a federal penitentiary to begin his eighteen-year sentence.
A secondary article noted that Lucy Grant had entered her guilty plea and had been assigned to a low-security vocational facility in upstate New York.
Marcus walked out onto the terrace, carrying a leather portfolio stamped with the official seal of the New York State Surrogate’s Court.
"The final bankruptcy settlement for Sterling and Cole Logistics was approved by the judge an hour ago, Victoria," Marcus reported.
"All commercial debt has been fully cleared through our acquisition of their deep-water port leases."
"And what happened to the remnants of the family?" Victoria asked, setting her teacup down gently on the saucer.
"Diane Cole accepted a court-ordered administrative position at a regional community archive in upstate New York," Marcus replied.
"Ethan was denied every executive licensing credential by the state board."
"Last week, our investigators confirmed he took a job managing night inventory at an auto parts warehouse in New Jersey."
"He will spend the next fifteen years paying off the remaining civil penalties from his wages."
Victoria looked out toward the horizon, where the skyscrapers of Manhattan reached into the endless blue sky.
The journey had been ruthless, but she had never once compromised her dignity or her father’s legacy.
She had peeled away the layers of false friends, parasitic lovers, and treacherous relatives with the precision of a surgeon.
She touched the three-stone diamond ring resting on her finger, feeling the engraved words LOVE, MOM pressing against her skin.
Her mother’s memory had been honored; her empire had been fortified; her name stood uncontested.
Victoria stood up from her chair and walked to the edge of the glass balustrade, feeling the cool morning breeze against her face.
There would be new business battles to fight, new acquisitions to negotiate, and new challenges to conquer.
May you like
But she would face every one of them from the undisputed summit of her own world.
The door had been shut on the impostors forever.
