Chapter 4 - The Silk Robe & The False Heir

Forty-five minutes after being expelled from the Obsidian Club, Victoria arrived at her private penthouse on Madison Avenue.
This residence was not a corporate suite; it was her personal sanctuary, purchased entirely through her private trust before she ever met Ethan.
As she stepped off the private penthouse elevator, the heavy mahogany double doors suddenly swung open from within.
Standing in the doorway was Lucy Grant, wrapped comfortably in a luxurious champagne silk robe.
Her blonde hair was disheveled, and her makeup was smeared from crying, but her eyes flared with hysterical fury the moment she saw Victoria.
"Get out of my house!" Lucy screamed, her voice echoing violently down the private elevator foyer.
Victoria did not flinch; she simply extended her hand toward the digital biometric panel beside the door.
The smart lock chime sounded, followed by a calm, synthesized electronic voice: "Welcome home, Miss Hale."
Victoria held the heavy brass door handle, preventing Lucy from slamming it shut.
"Apparently not your house," Victoria said with a calm, chilling smile.
She stepped past Lucy with effortless power, entering the expansive, double-height living room overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
The space was littered with open champagne bottles, discarded fashion magazines, and unpacked luggage that did not belong there.
Victoria walked slowly across the white Italian marble, her fingers lightly brushing against an exquisite crystal decanter on the bar console.
She turned around, her eyes sweeping over the living room until they rested on the silk garment Lucy was clutching tightly against her chest.
"You moved her into my private residence, Ethan?" Victoria asked, addressing Ethan, who had just stepped out of the primary hallway.
Lucy crossed her arms defensively, lifting her chin with stubborn, unearned arrogance.
"Ethan gave me this place! He told me this penthouse was part of the Cole family estate!"
Victoria pointed toward the marble console and the artwork hanging above the fireplace.
"That glassware set was a gift from my godfather for my twenty-fifth birthday."
"That oil painting on the mantel was acquired by my mother at Christie’s London."
"And that robe..." Victoria stepped closer, pointing directly at the left lapel.
Delicately embroidered in shimmering gold thread were the initials: V.H.
"Those are my initials: Victoria Hale."
Lucy grabbed the collar of the robe, her voice turning shrill and defensive.
"It's just clothes! You have hundreds of clothes! What kind of billionaire obsesses over a piece of fabric?"
"A woman who honors her property," Victoria replied coldly.
Lucy sneered, marching toward the primary bedroom hallway with theatrical confidence.
"You think this penthouse still belongs to you? Look at what our real life looks like!"
Lucy grabbed a heavy silver picture frame from the dresser and shoved it aggressively into Victoria’s hands.
The frame contained a photograph of Ethan and Lucy embracing at a lavish gala.
Victoria did not look at the photo; her fingers felt a slight irregularity beneath the velvet backing paper.
With a deliberate, sharp motion, Victoria tore the paper backing open.
A folded hospital envelope slipped out of the frame and fluttered onto the marble floor.
Ethan gasped, lunging forward with outstretched arms.
"Lucy, stop! Don't touch that!" Ethan yelled in pure, unadulterated panic.
Victoria stepped forward, planted her heel on the edge of the paper, and bent down gracefully to retrieve the medical letter.
She unfolded the document, her eyes scanning the official clinic letterhead from Continental Diagnostic Laboratories.
"Four months..." Victoria read aloud, her voice ringing with absolute clarity.
"You lied to him, Lucy. And you lied to his mother."
Ethan stood frozen in terror, his hands clutched against his temples.
Victoria turned the medical report around, holding the front page inches from Ethan’s face and Lucy’s widening eyes.
Bold black lettering stamped across the clinic summary read: PREGNANCY NOT CONFIRMED.
"You claimed you were pregnant?" Victoria asked, her tone sharp and piercing.
"She... she told me she was pregnant!" Ethan stammered, pointing a shaking finger at Lucy.
"That was why my mother moved her into the penthouse! That was why we announced the engagement!"
Lucy backed into the corner of the hallway, her face turning deathly white as her final shield evaporated.
"We were together before that... six months ago!" Lucy screamed, trying desperately to justify her deception.
"He wanted a child! He wanted an heir to prove to his mother that he was a real man!"
Victoria stared at them with deadpan, icy disgust.
"Read the last line on that page, Ethan: Pregnancy not confirmed."
"She used a forged clinic slip to crawl into my home, and you betrayed four years of partnership without even verifying the truth."
Victoria dropped the medical paper at Ethan’s feet, letting it flutter against his polished shoes.
"You didn't steal my life, Lucy."
"You merely volunteered to take over my biggest mistake."
Before Ethan could fall to his knees, the penthouse elevator bell chimed once again, and the heavy doors slid open.
Diane Cole stormed into the foyer, her velvet coat billowing behind her like dark wings, her face twisted with incandescent rage.
Diane rushed straight toward Victoria, her hand shooting out to grab Victoria’s wrist.
"How dare you throw my future daughter-in-law out onto the street!" Diane shrieked.
"This was never your family, Victoria! You are a sterile, heartless businesswoman who never knew how to keep a man happy!"
Victoria wrenched her arm free with swift, athletic force, stepping back into the center of the foyer.
"Don't touch me, Diane," Victoria commanded, her voice cutting through the room like a razor.
Victoria reached into her coat and lifted a black magnetic penthouse access card.
"Did you give this card to Lucy, Diane?"
Diane raised her chin, entirely shameless and smug.
"Yes, I did! Lucy needed somewhere suitable to stay while the wedding preparations were underway!"
"Ethan was going to leave you anyway! I chose Lucy as my daughter-in-law months ago!"
Victoria walked toward the digital panel beside the main entrance, holding the card aloft.
Diane scoffed and stepped toward the scanner, pulling her own duplicate access card from her purse.
"This penthouse was promised to the Cole family, and no piece of paper is going to—"
Diane tapped her card against the panel.
A piercing red alarm light strobed across the digital screen, accompanied by an electronic alert: "ACCESS DENIED / GUEST ACCESS PERMANENTLY REVOKED."
Diane tapped the card furiously five times, but the door remained sealed, the red light flashing rhythmically against her trembling face.
"What is wrong with this wretched thing?!" Diane screamed, pounding her fists against the bronze frame.
Victoria stepped smoothly across the threshold, retreating inside the safety of her private penthouse.
"Nothing is wrong with it, Diane," Victoria replied with composed, ruthless satisfaction.
"Guest access revoked."
"You were always merely a guest in my life."
"And so was she."
Diane let out a spiteful, desperate screech through the closing doorway.
"Fine! Go ahead and lock the doors! At least Lucy gave Ethan what you never could!"
Victoria reached out, holding the heavy door open by an inch, her icy whisper penetrating the hallway silence.
"What exactly did she give him, Diane?"
May you like
"What are you hiding right now?"
With a smooth, resounding click, Victoria locked the deadbolt, leaving the ruined family trapped outside in the cold corridor.
